Now I'm wondering whether anyone has ever made an International Phonetic Alphabet crossword. It would take care of the all diacritic/accent mark issues, but I imagine you'd have people coming at you with dialectal difference pitchforks, particularly for vowels (e.g., the /pɛn/ - /pIn/ divide)

AVCX crosswords *do not* treat the letter N as equivalent to Ñ (bc they are different). If you’ve got NIÑO going across, it can’t be PIANO down, it has to be ARAÑA etc. And if you have ANO in the grid, it’s getting clued as “Acapulco Anus,” not “Spanish year.” Need to put this in our spec sheet

Mr. Van Eman - freshman and AP bio. Folksy and brilliant, with a particular affinity for botany. He was so passionate that I still get excited when I think about the Calvin cycle. He had super high expectations for us all year but when the AP exams were over he taught us how to play bridge.

Thinking about shitty teachers is a bummer so, what about good teachers? Who’s in your Hall of Fame & why? ⭐️ Mrs. Flam, 5th grade. Colorful polyester suits, orangish hair in an updo. Played guitar & taught us to sing age-inappropriate folk songs. Could see I was struggling & was unfailingly kind ❤️

Each kid in my daughter’s kindergarten class wrote and illustrated a book this spring & they presented their books today. I know I’m supposed to have a slightly more sophisticated understanding of child language development but I’m pretty sure it’s 75% witchcraft

Every once in a while I will revisit something (a paper, some code, writing, whatever) that I struggled with in the past and the rush of realizing I've learned stuff in the interim that makes it less of a struggle the second time around should be bottled and sold in gas stations.

It's that point of the semester where every conversation with faculty and fellow students goes something like, "Hey, how are you?" "Oh........... you know..........." * thousand yard stare * "Yup." "Yup." .... .... ... "Okay, well, hang in there!" "You too!"

Don't put off your homework 'til the last minute, kids, especially if your homework involves significant computer processing time. My laptop sounds like it's about to take off into low earth orbit and my homework is no closer to being done than it was an hour ago.

When I worked in a rat lab, we indexed depression by how long it took them to stop swimming when you put them in water. Rats are neutrally buoyant; when they give up, they float. 15 yrs later, I wonder how many trials w/a given rat will be valid. At some point, won't they figure it out & have fun?

Re-read the original Harry Harlow paper and it reminded me that when my daughter was an infant and absolutely captivated by lights, we called the elaborate light fixture in our kitchen The Wire Mother because it was the first thing she started to smile at.
