This is the weakness of AI. We, as editors, see hundreds of submissions per year. We see the patterns; the probabilistic repetitions; the common structure. The unoriginality becomes visible a mile off, but remains invisible to someone who is using the tool, simply because of the volume we see.

The part the productivity pitch skips: AI made the writing cheap and the checking expensive, and the checking is what got dumped on you. Twenty of seventy isn't a labor saving, it's a labor transfer from the authors who used it to the reviewers who have to catch it, for free.

"They’ll be able to say, ‘Hey, I’m student number 1234,’ and then the robot will be like, ‘Hey, we were talking about this yesterday, do you want to continue that conversation?”
