nono, i got your note. just. why didn't you text me? i would have picked up more plums. i wasn't saving THOSE SPECIFIC plums. now i gotta go to the store again and. no, it's fine. it's fine. i'm fine. it's just been a long day.

Keir Starmer's final speech sounded very therapeutic - and I mean this positively. A speech you'd utter after heartbreak to create your own emotional closure, feel centrered, positive + proud of how you have behaved and how you choose to live going forward.

Starmer resigns. And in an incredibly personal conclusion to his speech, he will now focus "on the most important job: being the best husband I can to my incredible wife Vic... and being the best Dad I can to my beautiful children who are my pride and joy."

The average person in the street might not bother with policies. But they do want to feel their government is delivering on keeping them safe. John Healey's resignation plays into a narrative that this government can't keep its people safe.

Think also the “wealthy pensioner” is going to become the reverse teen single mother (a policy problem that is now solved that people still bore on about), in a few years we will have so much more pensioner poverty than we do now.

I suppose you could with excessive generosity read this as "undue pressure" but "no pressure" is just nonsensical. This was a decision to appoint a specific figure to a hugely important diplomatic role: it did not take the form of a text to the FCDO saying "Mandy for US ambo? no worries if not xx".

"No pressure existed whatsoever" on the FCDO to appoint Mandelson, Keir Starmer tells the House of the Commons. And that, I think, is gonna be a big big hostage to fortune.
