Many noble attempts were made tonight to catch the moon collision 🌝 I will be curious if the booster: 1) created a smaller plume than expected, 2) hit the back of the moon, or 3) had an "unexpected" trajectory. Goodnight ya'll

I am having fun watching astro-streamers freak out about the moon collision, and how it is late/not visible yet🍿
Climate change is increasing the average annual burned area of Alberta’s forests. As fires burn across Canada this summer, learn more from our archives about the feedback loops that drive such fires 👇 eos.org/articles/fee...
Feedback Loops of Fire Activity and Climate Change in Canada - Eos
New research documents how a warming climate contributes to patterns in wildfire severity and frequency and how the fires contribute to climate change.

"Will I be able to see the crash?" Probably not, but that doesn't mean friends in the Americas shouldn't try (daylight for those in Europe): look to the eastern limb of the Einstein crater. The @eso.org VLT will observe it & NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter is taking before and after images! 🔭🧪🛰️
Scientists do love turning accidents into discovery! Wed 5th Aug 06:34UTC: 4 tonnes of Space-X debris will crash into the moon 😮 This sim shows what will happen, if we understand the moon as well as we think we do. If we see something different, we learn something new! 👏 🧪🔭🛰️ 🎥 William Jo/UT Austin
This year the orbital mechanics spirits will look favorably upon the high-latitude. Remember to wear appropriate eye protection (not just sunglasses), and cross your fingers for some gnarly eclipse+aurora photos!
What is a solar eclipse? The phenomenon happens when the Sun, Moon and Earth are perfectly aligned. ☀️ 🌑 🌍 The Moon blocks light from the Sun and casts a shadow on Earth. The eclipse is visible to anybody within this shadow. That's what will happen on 12 August. 1/3 🔭 🧪 #EuropeanSolarEclipse
Quick reminder to talk to congress if you oppose the new OMB rules rolling into effect soon. The AGU Science Policy Action Center helps make this super easy: agu.quorum.us/campaign/166...
Tell Congress: Stop OMB’s proposed restrictions on federal grantmaking
Now is the time to ask Congress to roll back this damaging rule.

AGU declined my town hall, which was a check-in on reaching the "State of the Profession" goals from the 2024 Solar and Space Physics Decadal survey (i.e. a session on how the heliophysics workplace has changed since 12/2024). On the plus side, I save a $500 fee Results will go out in a few months!

Last night we saw "Bone Wars" (www.bonewarsthemusical.com), a musical about the feud between paleontologists Marsh and Cope in the 1800s. Highly recommend if you like history, the arts, science and society, and singing dinosaurs 🎶🦖
While in Houston, I checked out Meow Wolf Houston's Radio Tave. Go MIPS!
This week I was at Space Center Houston as faculty advisor to Team Star Maker, an undergraduate team competing in the nasaorbit.org competition. The competition was excellent, the museum is incredible, and the Johnson Space Center tours were top-notch.
Life has taken me from about 10 spoons a day to about 2... and they’re Baskin Robbins sampler spoons 🥄
In the typical "lifecycle" of a scientist, you get used to moving to places where you can research most effectively the science you are interested in. Science moves to where it can most effectively act.

On my way back from Bern (by the way, I was in Bern the past week working on a radar book) I stopped at the Laténium Parc et Musée d'Archéologie, which was incredible! My favorite piece was a neolithic carving of a person, with a face, fingers, and ribs...I also liked this silly little diorama dude😁
Prime Minister @mark-carney.bsky.social. I saw a "Government of Canada" plane at Dublin airport. Is this yours? If so, can I get a prize?
It is an absolute pleasure working with @issibern.ch Thank you for all you do for space science!!! 🌠
