today's alex-mega-gamedev-tip: one of my favourite passtimes is getting deep into design thoughts on whatever im working on; on walks, in the shower. but dont let the thinking get more than about 1 day ahead of the process of actually making it. any more, and you're probably wasting your time... 🧵
just found out there's a melee local that does top 8 graphics based on a game of the winner's choice... and at some point it was won by a man of taste
Arnell Group's Pepsi BREATHTAKING Design Strategy document is probably worth $27 to me. if the only way I'd get to see it again was to pay $27 i would do so in a heartbeat
i was reminded that i made a helpful tool if you're somebody who files FOIA requests for email logs (as a spreadsheet) upload them to GraphEmails.com and you can generate network graphs of who's emailing each other, which you can style and filter (or use to filter the log)
Younger daughter & I found these fossilised crinoid rock stars (segments of the ‘stem’ of Jurassic feather stars/sea lilies, related to starfish & sea urchins) in the gravel on the edge of a lake nr Peterborough UK. She used them to make an ammonite:
solving laplace's equation ∇⋅(∇f)=Δf=0 for a height field f given three known points
A dev friend introduced me to this talk yesterday and I absolutely loved it. "Even when you think you're really hot at making decisions on the fly, you're almost always regurgitating something that your background mind has already figured out" youtu.be/f84n5oFoZBc

Witness the mesmerizing sea angel (*Clione* sp.), a real-life creature gliding beneath the ice of the White Sea. Captured by Alexander Semenov, this beauty is no illusion.
The nascent HTML-in-Canvas API is exciting to me not because of flashy effects, but because it extends the semantics that the DOM can (tractably) represent — as a tiny example, it's possible to show an element in multiple places, cheaply, under arbitrary transforms. folkjs.org/demos/html-i...
Messed up my hand tendons gaming too hard so I’ve been on a gaming/coding t-break over the past week. It feels good to go for a walk!
found a whole operation of unmanned youtube channels making completely unchecked long form slop videos where the ai voice simulacra regularly trips up & does this for a full ten minutes every time. all the very legit comments are like "NO! THATS NOT TRUE! YOU LIE HE DID NOT" & never acknowledge it.

I wanted a way to explore Unicode by visual similarity, not just by name or codepoint, so I built Charcutrie. It lets you browse characters that look alike, search across scripts and symbols, and even sketch a shape to find matching glyphs. (pretty badly for now :D) charcuterie.elastiq.ch#U+221E
I got laid off last Monday! Not sure yet what the next move is, in the mean time I’m just gonna chill out for a while.

a lot of folks around GDC at the "all chat" event at tiat last week saw me do a bite sized version of this talk about childhood memories of new age, pure moods, and how it ties into conspiracy theories & much more. anyway, reminder: you can watch the full version here www.youtube.com/watch?v=x6wg...

GDC was great!! I was so busy every day, I went to like 3 talks total but I was totally wiped by the end. Big highlights: Palace of Fine Arts escape room Tiat show Wanted (2008) watch party EGS (shoutout Cabbibo) Day of the devs Post GDC deadlock LAN party SLOG meetup Dim sum 3 tiki bars
I have at times live-posted GDC sessions and now I’ve picked “Teaching Games with Games” where @alt254.bsky.social & @chouxsalad.bsky.social have designated this year’s 4-person panel topic as “teaching students about generative AI” without doing what S.B. describes as “cop shit” (policing AI usage)
