Good news! For the first time in at least 25 years, more than half of global billionaire wealth is now held by self-made entrepreneurs who earned their fortunes through competitive market activities, i.e. the rest of us buying their products. No inherited dynasties, plunder or expropriation.

This is the best piece yet written on the Jason Arday affair. Finally, someone else is suitably outraged by the disgraceful behaviour of Arday and his defenders at Cambridge and beyond

If what is arguably the most coveted academic position in this field can be given to an apparently exorbitantly fraudulent scholar with a crepe-paper-thin record of serious publications, and he is then protected by lots of Very Important People who might as well be promising that up is down and left is right and that only bigots disagree, serious scholars in aligned fields, with less coveted positions at less prestigious (and protected) universities - and I know several such people - all stand to suffer in perpetuity.

Some notes by little me on recent, hugely damaging, shamefully shameless events at Cambridge University. rorywaterman.substack.com/p/notes-on-a-cambridge-debacle If you read only one article about what has happened, try the new piece by Lanre Bakare in the Guardian, linked in my blog post.

Some academics seem to be committed to proving that conservative enemies of academia are entirely right about it. I still think they aren't and that most scholars just want to ignore this shit to stay out of trouble, but that there are professional academics defending obvious plagiarism is shocking

Disgusted with @thetimes for presenting this non-story. If it has to be covered at all it should be framed as Discredited Racist Smears Black Cambridge Professor in Sustained Campaign to Undermine Him. Arday quoted & cited sources appropriately. www.thetimes.com/uk/education...

Jews and Muslim dissidents have real reasons to be afraid. The rest of us mostly have friends and careers to lose. While Jews and Muslim dissidents face real physical threats, non-Jewish academics and public intellectuals fear social and professional consequences. By @maartenboudry.bsky.social

What Are You Afraid Of?

How the deadliest thing (not just disease) in human history could've been destroyed seven decades ago, mostly with the help of a miracle chemical called DDT. Unfortunately, Africa was left out of the plan. Fantastically well-executed & informative video. www.youtube.com/watch?v=BJYf... via Postbro

I always enjoy a good debunking of nostalgia for a "Golden Age". This one I actually lived through! I can attest that kids in the 80s-90s watched tons of TV. At home, we only had a lousy black-and-white set with no cable, and screen time was rationed. But I made up for it at my friends' houses. 😉

From today, I identify as Māori. I've always felt that I was a Māori trapped in a Caucasian body. If you refuse to accept that my ethnic identity doesn't align with my race assigned at birth (RAAB), you're engaging in a form of "existential denial"—and I will sue you for symbolic genocide. /1

European ethicists identify a terrifying threat from across the Atlantic: cars that learn not to crash. It's scandalous our that precious road data is exploited by Musk to make cars safer — enriching him with sensitive data of what roundabouts looks like. Won't someone think of the data sovereignty?

It's not just the Left that's suffering from cognitive dissonance about heat waves. The Right can't seem to make up their minds either. You can't have it both ways: ➡️Pooh-pooh extreme heat: "Don't be so alarmist, chill out and go for a swim!" ➡️Blame anti-A/C Greens for thousands of heat deaths.

20,000+ heat deaths because Europe refused to install A/C. But think about all the future lives saved! The more seniors die now, the less A/C our grandkids will need. It's intergenerational solidarity: the old sacrificing for the unborn. Europe is leading the world, one sweltering bedroom at a time.

Everyone in Europe could have life-saving A/C with zero carbon emissions if we had simply done what China did over the past decade: double our nuclear capacity. Instead, Europe shut down its nuclear power plants—and then lectured people for using too much energy, even as thousands died from heat.
