i believe as progressives we should have stable, well defined goals from policy outcomes - nobody suffers from lack of basic necessities, everyone has a fair say in decisions that affect their lives, etc - but be agnostic to the actual policies that get there, and approach them scientifically

there's a bit of a slight of hand in this statement - even if it's accurate to say LLMs produce the next most probable token one at a time, that appears to be meaningfully different from producing the most probable overall response - especially with chain-of-thought / reasoning!

there seems to be a bit of an implied motte and bailey with gentrification: - motte: it's bad when developers conspire to buy up property, evict everyone, and build much more expensive housing/businesses (i don't think this is common) - bailey: any change that seems to improve a neighborhood is bad

madison@maddie.gay · 2mo agoso the main conclusion (besides a bunch more data i want to collect) is i should only bother with public chargers at rates below $0.50/kWh (although this goes up with gas prices) the rule being "divide the gas price by 10.2" to get the electricity price ...subject to re-evaluating with more data

took my first longer drive with the new PHEV today - just under 100 miles round trip, with a ~empty battery going there and ~10kWh coming back with some interesting results now that i do the math
And while I'm retweeting Nathan, I would desperately like everyone on Bluesky to read & internalize this thread of his. The fact is, people generally say what they think. There's no secret Straussian cabal manipulating things. People aren't lying for money. They believe the things they say.

my recent new car purchase (lease) went much more smoothly than i expected (there was no negotiation and i paid exactly what they advertised) - i didn't realize that is because it's the law here

compared to flags that go out of their way to add symbolism and deeper meaning, i much prefer “riffing on what’s familiar”
Andy Craig@andycraig.bsky.social · 2mo agoThey knew it was necessary to have one for ships and armies and such, but the flag as a sacred national symbol freighted with deeper meaning wasn't until much later, mainly the Civil War. It was initially just a practical design they didn't give that much thought to and riffed off what was familiar.
