Revenge of the Mad Mohair

i'm interested how the tech hype spiral progresses from feasible but too-soon promises, to unfeasible sci-fi nonsense, to 'you know what, fuck it, we're gonna cause a doomsday event and kill everyone' like that last step seems counterproductive, but maybe it's the only way to keep turning the dial

I keep trying to think of any historical example where a given technology's PROMOTERS AND TRUE BELIEVERS were like 'we are absolutely going to ruin your fucking life so be prepared like it's the end of the world'

Andrew Curran: Axios is reporting that the top labs are wargaming scenarios for the aftermath of a catastrophic event in the next 6 - 12 months, that some executives now see as being inevitable.

Axios: Top executives at Anthropic, OpenAl and other Al companies are privately gaming out scenarios for a public and political revolt after a catastrophic AI event.
Why it matters: These officials anticipate a large-scale event, most likely a cyberattack, that shuts down access to financial services, internet connectivity, or even power and water.

Edouard Harris: This is our view as well. Relatedly, average people will want to increase their level of personal resilience and preparedness as their resources allow. We will be publishing about this soon.

Nick Farina: Best ways to be prepared? Generators, water, books and DVDs?

Edouard Harris: Power, water, food, sanitation for most part. Parts of this depend on your geo latitude - solar vs propane for eg.

But also: set aside a computer that is not (and ideally has never been) connected to the internet. Buy faraday pouches and tape. Print out essential docs on paper.

we have to end religious thinking when it comes to a lot of anti-AI stuff (and I would argue a lot of progressive movements as well) because we just end up spending our time looking for who has the number of the beast without actually convincing anybody, a thing that is Not Impossible to do

the problem i always had with the whole glup shitto bit is that eventually they have to hit the jackpot and make a guy that even those of us who believe we're above it wants to see everywhere. biddy blas is the fucking jackpot

like people try to dunk on nicholas cage for ridiculous shit he wears but you and I would also wear whatever the fuck we wanted if we never had to think about money again. It's the guys who wear graphic tees under sports jackets that are doing 9/11 to minorities in their heads

It’s normal (and correct) to refuse to sign your likeness or performance over to AI. Even if there’s no indication that AI will specifically be used? Even if legally you’d be protected according to all sources? Saying no and standing by that is right.

Nicolas Cage says he’s “probably not” working with Amazon again after refusing to sign AI waiver for “Spider-Noir”: ‘I am not an AI-friendly actor’

mfers be like 'games are so young' and I just laugh and remember sitting there playing The Game of Ur with Ashurbanipal and getting his ass so heated he was threatening to scatter my idols and drape my skin from the city walls 😂😂 young bloods don't know shit!!!!

LOUIS THEROUX: (shouting at ceiling) Hi Wallace, it's Louis. Are you coming down? V.O.: I'd been told to expect the unexpected when Wallace came down for breakfast. WALLACE: Be there in a minute! Enjoy the show! LOUIS: (to Gromit) Is this normal?
