Achievements are also disenchanting. So many games have easter eggs whose mere discovery was rewarding enough. I'm imagining how turning that into an "achievement" makes a once pleasant surprise into a task to check off.

made this post a few months ago being shocked to learn how big they’d gotten i still feel like i really need to revisit so many 360/PS3 games because when they released i didn’t engage with the games nearly as much as I just used them as a vehicle for the meta-social-game of achievement hunting

posting again to grumble about achievements that are just "grind a whole lot and get a big number" all the time you spend grinding to get big number could be spent just playing the game having fun finishing the game playing another game I don't wanna live in a hamster wheel
Game achievements sell the illusion you can achieve something in games
I just wanna play the game not have a spreadsheet dictate my every action. some achievements are also just kind of weird and out of pocket yeah if you have fun playing this way that's...fine but I absolutely cannot live like this myself

I remember on the Vita if you tried to start a game that for whatever reason did not have trophies (like for example, a patched app to fire h-encore² for homebrew enabling) it would actually go like "This game has no trophies. Are you sure you want to play this?" like Holy Shit Sony what the hell?
The nerds of Gen Z owe a lot to retro games, or at least I do
