I had this crab model for probably a decade. And with my recent obsession with small scale, it was only a matter of time before I turned it into a construction kaiju.

Created by acclaimed Kaga-Yuzen master Kakimoto Ichiro (柿本市郎) for the 42nd Traditional Kaga-Yuzen Crafts Exhibition, Shirobana Higan ("White Spider Lily") is a tour de force of high-craft textile art.

Executed as a furisode and displayed in full eba-moyō layout—where the pattern flows seamlessly across every seam—the garment exemplifies the supreme painterly discipline of Kaga-Yuzen. Unlike Kyoto’s Kyo-Yuzen, which frequently incorporates gold leaf (kinhaku) or heavy embroidery to heighten luxury, Kaga-Yuzen relies purely on dye technique, precise line drawing (itome-yuzen), and delicate shading (bokashi) to achieve its depth and quiet drama. Set against a rich indigo-navy (kon-iro) silk ground, the composition explodes with the rhythmic vitality of white spider lilies (Lycoris albiflora). Crisp, luminous white petals with delicately recurved tips and soaring, thread-like stamens dominate the upper shoulders and hem. Kakimoto achieves extraordinary atmospheric dimension by silhouetting these crisp foreground blooms against shadowy, speckled background blossoms rendered in soft lavender and slate-violet hues. Slender, mint-green and seafoam stems rise vertically through the composition, anchoring the sweeping, buoyant motion of the petals and gold-tipped filaments. Inspired by the arresting sight of pale spider lilies standing resolutely amid a sea of vibrant red blooms, Kakimoto translates a fleeting moment of natural wonder into a profound study of resilience and poise. The stark contrast between the luminous white floral forms and the midnight-blue background creates a dramatic, almost nocturnal glow, capturing both the fragile elegance and unwavering spirit of the autumn flower.
