Ezra Klein got up the morning after the election and said "it's time to bring back The Pro Life Democrat Think Piece". One must imagine he was jealous of Micheal Tracey hogging the Pro Rape Liberal Commentator spotlight

1960s acid guy who does still thinks you can self-administer conversion therapy by taking enough LSD, but now only condones this practice in pursuit of becoming bisexual

The new "you have to remove your tire before you get on the train" Amtrak rule is so annoying. If you bump the brakes w/ the front tire removed they pop out so you're carrying your bag carry on bike and front tire onto the train at once and if you bump anything you're sitting in the aisle fixing it

Y'all are getting negatively polarized against a beautiful public mainframe future simply because this guy wants to charge rent on a public utility and will only let you use it for his annoying hobby Like not wanting a public water supply simply because the mad king makes you pay to drink piss

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman says having RAM in personal computers is a ‘terrible’ use of limited resources and that it would be better utilized in data centers "From a global perspective it’s quite terrible to have everyone have a bunch of the world’s limited supply of DRAM sitting in their computer"

When I was a kid I would half plug in a nightlight and touch it until like part of my arm went dead. Every now and then I think about how easily I could have killed myself and am amazed any child ever lives to adulthood

Why is the first thing people ask me when I describe a math problem I enjoy what use that has in the real world Idk man what use does Foucault have in the real world? Like outside of beauty or passion there are obviously a lot of things we study at school which aren't professional training

I made a reply to this effect but it's driving me nuts that he takes this tone and won't mention the Race Science of it all. It's not that it's hard to miss it's hard to avoid. Anytime the inhibitions are dropped (vibecamp, EAG afters, doing k late at night) It Will Come Up

Roose does a very nice job signaling in the second paragraph what sort of book this will be. He decided to write it the night after partying with ketamine-snorting effective accelerationists. He isn’t e/acc himself, but he hangs with that crowd and accepts their premises as newsworthy,

Prologue
I decided to write this book in February 2025, sitting in traffic on the Bay Bridge, when I realized that I was living through the strangest time la ever known.
I'd stayed up too late the previous night at an Al-themed party in the Mission, where tech workers affiliated with a movement known as Effective Accelerationism lounged on beanbags in an art loft, snorting ketamine while debating the singularity.
I dragged myself out of bed, made coffee, and went to report on an Al safety conference, where panicked experts proclaimed that Al systems were rapidly approaching human-level intelligence and that we were running out of time to figure out how to prevent them from going rogue.
In my car on the way home, I got a text from a researcher at one of the big Al labs, who said that due to a recent breakthrough he couldn't tell me about, he now expected superhuman Al to arrive in a year or two, rather than in five or ten years.
I'm a San Francisco-based tech columnist and podcast host (most recently at The New York Times, where I worked from 2017 to 2026), and my job has always involved talking to people with weird visions of the future.
But those visions got significantly weirder in the mid-2020s as the tech industry reoriented around a single, all-consuming idea-a quest that half
I the other half thought

At some point in 2019 I was annoyed that American food has no protein in it and talked about it a bunch and I feel like I'm living in a cruel genie's wish
