Absolutely fantastic to see such a massive turnout for @hwucu.bsky.social's first day of strike action. An excellent showing from our members (and lots of messages of support from those striking from home!) and a wonderful number of supporters too!

A picket line outside Heriot-Watt University. Around 60 people are gathered with various banners and placards and very bright pink UCU hats.

This is a thread about UCU & what it has become over the last few years. But the first thing I want to say is I didn’t join a union to stay silent or turn my back on a single parent of three facing dismissal on the basis of their trade union activities. Marie Monaghan is the Unite UCU 1/12

Marie is our RSO & she’s brilliant. 17 years of service to UCU members, recognised by everyone but UCU management for her health & safety expertise … knowing what we know about the high bar for legal support, Unite would not be supporting her so unequivocally if she didn’t have a strong case.

Marie is our Regional Support Officer & is fantastic. Trade union victimisation is indefensible & abhorrent. To see it done by a union employer undermines the work of all trade unionists. We have written to the GS to call for a stop to the victimisation and to settle the dispute. #HandsOffMarie

Please take five minutes today to email your MP, share how these attacks are affecting staff and students, and ask them to add their name to EDM 2479 “Higher education pension cuts” in support of secure pensions and decent conditions in our sector. 2/2

UCU members: MPs are considering an Early Day Motion on higher education pension cuts that condemns fire-and-rehire tactics, use of subsidiaries to undermine contracts, and threats of dismissal or pay freezes to force pension cuts. edm.parliament.uk/ea... 1/2

Higher education pension cuts - Early Day Motions - UK Parliament

That this House expresses its alarm at the growing number of higher education institutions deploying approaches which are having a negative impact on the pension schemes of academics and staff, including through fire and rehire proposals and other approaches tantamount to forcing workers onto worse contracts, terms and conditions; further expresses alarm that such actions have triggered trade disputes at institutions such as Southampton Solent and Northumbria universities, where staff are facing threats of dismissal and permanent pay freezes, respectively, unless they agree to pension cuts; insists that using subsidiary companies to circumvent employment rights and to undermine pay, terms or conditions is unacceptable behaviour that simply serves to negatively impact industrial relations further in a sector already suffering from mass redundancies and industrial action; calls on the Office for Students immediately to investigate institutions accused by trade unions of undermining pension rights to establish whether they are failing in their duties, including those relating to good governance and protecting the interests of students; and further calls on the Government to take urgent steps to prevent pension cuts and a race to the bottom in higher education provision, including through legislative change if necessary.

Our (slightly droopy) banner at the back there as a delegation from the branch committee visited striking UCU workers at INTO Manchester fighting against a 2% pay offer from their employer, well behind the rate of inflation. Thank you to all the amazing UCU branches who’ve been solid & vocal in supporting us. And huge #solidarity to those taking their own action. UCU isn’t one person, it’s its branches, its activists & its members. We want to work for & support you; being unable to properly do so is beyond upsetting.

We unequivocally support UCU staff on strike today! They have been so supportive, knowledgeable and hard working for our branch over the years. We can always count on them to have our backs. It's time to have theirs. Read our branch statement to Jo Grady the GS too. It's time to resolve this dispute

Dear Jo,

I am writing on behalf of the University of Liverpool and Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine UCU regarding the current dispute between UCU staff (members of Unite) and UCU as their employer.

We have been following the dispute closely and we are supportive of the Unite members and see their issues as legitimate and serious.

The fact that these longstanding issues involve bullying, and the unequal treatment of black staff is especially dismaying. These behaviours undermine the core principles of what trade unions are built on and have caused reputational harm to UCU within the wider trade union movement.

The support provided by UCU staff is vital to the normal functioning of local branches. In particular, the support, advice, and commitment we have received in our current dispute from regional officers and other staff has been exemplary. Along with many other branches currently in dispute, we urgently need these staff to be able to do their work in conditions that are equal, fair, and reasonable.

We urge senior managers in UCU to remain in talks with Unite and to resolve this dispute as a matter of urgency, in the spirit of good faith, solidarity and the union values we all share.

Mark O’Brien,

Branch President

Our branch has carried motions expressing our solidarity with @uniteucu.bsky.social & calling for an end to this dispute. Fighting for better & fairer workplaces is what we do - it’s time for @ucu.org.uk to change tack, to listen and build something with which members can be proud to be associated.
