it’s bad film criticism bc she isn’t a critic, she’s an academic. i don’t blame her for it, this just isn’t her medium and there was never a chance she would ever be able to *not* obsessively pick everything apart (this is why i find academia suffocating even if it’s obviously necessary and good)

Her arguments all boil down to “I would have made a different movie” which I find to be the least compelling flavor of film criticism

The tragedy of an individualistic rich society is that people think they can insure themselves from anything, but when collective crises happen, people will be desperately looking for public help that will have depleted because of the past hyperindividualism

In retrospect it sure seems like going 70 years (1931-2001) without simultaneous Republican control of all three branches was pretty load-bearing
