"When they came to the door, she shrieked through the peephole, she drove them off, how they feared her! She could hear their heels pounding down the half-dozen flights of cracked marble."

The war on literacy culture continues (I'm not really joking)
The new thing at the bottom of Gmail cuts off some of the space where you used to be able to read your emails, but at least it also has a lot of completely blank white space

Sonny Jurgensen, one of Washington’s greatest football players, dies at 91
In a Hall of Fame career, the Redskins quarterback was known as one the NFL’s best pure passers. He later spent years as a broadcaster.

A staggering statement from former Washington Post editor Marty Baron: "This ranks among the darkest days in the history of one of the world's greatest news organizations."
Not to pull rank, but it's objectively the case -- it was statistically a fact -- that at least during my childhood no newspaper meant more to its city than The Post did to D.C. It is impossible to think there does not remain long-term value in covering non-national news of interest to its readers.
The snow in New York is just amazingly foul at this point. It works like those black lights that reveal that all your surfaces are actually covered in disgusting bodily fluids. Practicing the willful blindness necessary to living here is getting to be impossible...
Worth noting that one reason you’re benefitting so fully from the Star-Tribune’s timely, extensive coverage of unfolding events is that it’s a metro newspaper that hasn’t been systematically starved to further enrich shareholders and executives.
Not on the beat anymore, but there's a real Burkean lament to be written about Notre Dame foregoing a bowl after missing the playoffs. "Notre Dame" is basically a creation of the Rose Bowl, as so much in the imagined community of college football is.

The future is not inevitable but it seems to me we're on a glide path toward right-wing institutions' winnowed down to rumps at least tolerant of antisemitism, which then capture the party, which in our 2-party presidential system could lead to a President from that cohort bsky.app/profile/jaco...

It is incredibly difficult for people (myself and everyone reading this included) to appreciate how wealthy the small handful of very wealthiest Americans are, not just compared to us, but compared to *other unimaginably wealthy people* bsky.app/profile/benw...
“My fundamental concern with regard to how much voting control I have at Tesla is, if I go ahead and build this enormous robot army, can I just be ousted at some point in the future?... I don't feel comfortable building that robot army unless I have a strong influence.” – Musk, arguing for $1T
Nice to see the launch of "Replay Booth" a new sport history podcast by @joshuablevin.bsky.social (formerly of @slate.com ). There's space for the kind of thoughtful, engaging sport stories the old "Only a Game" on NPR used to run, and this could be it. www.replaybooth.show/p/replay-boo...
