A limerick about belief systems (I know, I should get out more) We’re all born into systems of belief Versus facts do these act: as a reef They all have a Bible And “thoughts” that are tribal You agree or else come to some grief
We are re-watching The Wire, which we saw in 2010 and loved. Currently halfway through season two (the docks) OMFG it is an astonishing achievement. A key "text" for thinking about the 21st century.

Bordeaux, France, has now recorded more days above 40°C in 2026 alone than during the entire 105-year period from 1920 (when observations began) to 2025. This is deeply shocking.

Mark Carney as new liberal hero – “the capacity to stop pretending” Er, climate change?
I’d recommend a close listen to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s barn-storming speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos just now. (Video with adverts here). Transcript here. On …

Historian Ida Jones told me that Charlotte Hawkins Brown’s Palmer Memorial Institute was one of four prominent schools for Black children founded and led by Black women educators during the Progressive Era. We talked about the vision those schools shared and what set Brown apart.

Read a gruesome bit of ovid’s metamorphoses today. Plague is no fun whatsoever
The warnings came so thick and fast Our ears were blocked; the die was cast. Some decades more, of false increase We made a desert, and called it peace.
Someone should release an anthology of critical writing just called "women are too mean to male artists." You could also include all the sputtering, outraged responses to each piece for suits and giggles.

I co-sign this great summary from @dereklowe.bsky.social . The goal is to destroy academic science, and these are the reasons. And all the “gold standard” and “needs reform” and “not high risk” stuff is transparent bullshit to hide the ball on what they are doing.
Thoughts on the various Trump administration proposals to revamp US science funding - and what they all have in common:

NEW: I wrote for MSNBC about how Madison Square Garden turning off their facial recognition cameras for Taylor Swift is a perfect encapsulation of our dystopian present: where the wealthy can use surveillance to consolidate power, and the rest of us live in a privately owned panopticon.
Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce got to buy MSG's privacy. Her fans aren't so lucky.
Reports that Madison Square Garden temporarily shut off its facial recognition system for Swift’s wedding expose a glaring problem with how the elite wield and control mass surveillance.

"I know the names of every woman and child murdered in Northern Ireland in the last 10 years without even having to look them up. Not a single one was caused by a trans woman — I checked the list twice just to be sure." archive.ph/oQ2Cs
All the metaphors we use to describe heedlessly pursuing one's own destruction - lemmings, cargo cults, Easter island, etc. - are actually colonial myths based on mistakes or lies. The real analogy for heedlessly pursuing one's own destruction is the colonial society itself.

We binged The Pitt, of course . Top notch stuff. My prediction for season 3 is that there will be at least on plot line involving malnourished ppl, probably pregnant women, after SNAP benefits withdrawn
Right wing, pro-fossil fuels media has been particularly virulent in attacking Ed Miliband & #NetZero targets.“It’s no surprise that an agenda which challenges the profits of big oil has made him the target of coordinated smears by the industry & its allies," Ami McCarthy @greenpeaceuk.bsky.social

This same thing happened to me. I emailed an (also very well respected) book publisher to point out a recent book has a double digit number of hallucinated citations. The book is still on sale, unaltered.

Under a Binface government, anyone who doesn’t accept human-made climate change as fact will be sent back to school, from Year 1 right the way to A Levels, to see if anything goes in the second time round. #VoteBinface
