We are re-watching The Wire, which we saw in 2010 and loved. Currently halfway through season two (the docks) OMFG it is an astonishing achievement. A key "text" for thinking about the 21st century.

Bordeaux, France, has now recorded more days above 40°C in 2026 alone than during the entire 105-year period from 1920 (when observations began) to 2025. This is deeply shocking.

Historian Ida Jones told me that Charlotte Hawkins Brown’s Palmer Memorial Institute was one of four prominent schools for Black children founded and led by Black women educators during the Progressive Era. We talked about the vision those schools shared and what set Brown apart.

NEW: I wrote for MSNBC about how Madison Square Garden turning off their facial recognition cameras for Taylor Swift is a perfect encapsulation of our dystopian present: where the wealthy can use surveillance to consolidate power, and the rest of us live in a privately owned panopticon.

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce got to buy MSG's privacy. Her fans aren't so lucky.

Reports that Madison Square Garden temporarily shut off its facial recognition system for Swift’s wedding expose a glaring problem with how the elite wield and control mass surveillance.

All the metaphors we use to describe heedlessly pursuing one's own destruction - lemmings, cargo cults, Easter island, etc. - are actually colonial myths based on mistakes or lies. The real analogy for heedlessly pursuing one's own destruction is the colonial society itself.

We binged The Pitt, of course . Top notch stuff. My prediction for season 3 is that there will be at least on plot line involving malnourished ppl, probably pregnant women, after SNAP benefits withdrawn

Right wing, pro-fossil fuels media has been particularly virulent in attacking Ed Miliband & #NetZero targets.“It’s no surprise that an agenda which challenges the profits of big oil has made him the target of coordinated smears by the industry & its allies," Ami McCarthy @greenpeaceuk.bsky.social

Miliband - they attack him because they know what he’s done has worked, and attack net zero as it’s against their vested interests. Physics and chemistry remain true whoever is in charge. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

Under a Binface government, anyone who doesn’t accept human-made climate change as fact will be sent back to school, from Year 1 right the way to A Levels, to see if anything goes in the second time round. #VoteBinface
