While we were trialling acoustic equipment with our SEAMPHONI partners, GREENOV, in Madeira last week, a sperm whale breached just a few meters away! SEAMPHONI is an EU-funded project improving how Europe monitors and safeguards marine protected areas. seamphoni.eu
Artists Lena and Eldar visited Madeira last week and worked with our Megafauna team for a new art/science collaboration. Brainstorming, data collection and sperm whale sightings during fieldwork! We have great expectations for this collaboration -- stay tuned!
#DeepOmics just won a MARE-Évora Mini Grant! Led by Soraia Vieira, researcher at MARE-UÉvora, and joined by Paola Parretti at MARE-Madeira, this project will explore the biodiversity of deep-sea sediments. Stay tuned for updates!
Last week, 5 of our students took their posters and presentations to Peniche and participated in the European Marine Biology Symposium #EMBS! We're proud to see the next generation at MARE-Madeira already leaving their mark on the scientific community!
Congratulations, Dr. Mieke Weyn! Mieke successfully defended her thesis on the movements and social behaviors of short-finned pilot whales in the North Atlantic. Her work aids science and conservation (including a potentially important corridor between Madeira and the Canaries!)

We have a new doctor! Congratulations to Eva Iñiguez for successfully defending her PhD thesis this month! Eva studied organic UV filters (e.g. from sunscreen) in the marine environment, demonstrating their presence across a wide range of species and throughout the water column.
