A 1935 Hamilton cartoon by the late, great Ivan Glassco still holds a mirror to any Ontario municipality ahead of Monday's local elections. Low turnout trends suggest engagement is our toughest climb, but it is entirely optional to stay home. Cast your ballot, just make sure it’s an informed one.

When shame disappeared from the public discourse, it left behind naked corruption. When politeness disappeared, it left free rein to violent discrimination. When interest in learning disappeared, it left people defenceless against exploitation.

Just finished Slings and Arrows which I missed the the first time around. It's a wonderful series esp. for those who have spent time working in the theatre. It features a who's-who of Canadian TV and live theatre stars of the time i.e. 2003-6. Not to be missed!

Don't like the "greatest country" rhetoric. Canada is wonderful, with many advantages: freedom to be, speak, think; resources, nature, people who want to build the future. But other peoples also work to make their own countries progress. Let's be happy to have so much, without Murka-style boasts.

Canada is the greatest country on earth. A country where you are free to be who you want to be. To speak your mind. To worship as you choose. To live your life as you wish. That is independence. That is sovereignty.

Golf courses and afternoon businesses are the *only ones* to benefit from year-round DST. Morning workers, school kids, esp. teenagers, will suffer. I'm all for stopping the clock-changing nonsense. It must be for year-round Standard Time, as science and health pros have always demonstrated!

I heard another academic bemoan W. Canada's move to stick with DST. N.W. Ont.'s move to stay in sync with Mnba makes sense. Only businesses that benefit from longer afternoons have a compelling argument in favour of this bad decision. globalnews.ca/news/1210266...
