This is such a depressing read. Ironically, now humanitarianism is collapsing, there have probably never been so many people trained in humanitarian action. A generation of young people who will never use their skills. Or maybe this urge to professionalization was part of what went wrong?

Today is, among other things, a reminder that you don't get a general strike by posting that we should have a general strike. You get a general strike—on the rare occasions you do—by the long slow slog of building organizing power with those around you in response to local conditions.

The cover of issue 189 of The Continent is illustrated by cartoonist Gado. It's a send-up of the infamous Berlin Conference of 1884 which carved Africa amongst thee European powers. Instead of Africa being carved up however, it's the Democratic Republic of Congo being carved up amongst the leaders from the East African Community and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) who are meeting in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. At the head of the table is Tanzanian president Samia Suluhu Hassan. They are meeting to discuss the conflict between the DRC government and Rwandan-backed M23 soldiers.

A surprisingly fun exercise: I went on Chat GPT to test the results on street vendors & food sovereignty, to try to understand what might come up and if it supported our views. The results were...actually kinda great? Which means there is enough content out there about this to feed the algorithm
