This is how it became illegal to repair your own John Deere tractor and why a Canadian musician selling a song to a Canadian must hand over 30% to Apple. But now that Trump has just thrown this trade agreement in the dumpster, poured bourbon all over and set fire to it..... ....we could be free.

For more than a quarter of a century, the US Trade Representative has demanded that all of America's trading partners - including Canada - enact "anti-circumvention" laws that make it a crime to alter how a digital device works unless the original (usually American) manufacturer consents. 44/

Every single one of us protesters in these pictures would rather be at our desks making excellent games. The tragedy is that our owners are making that impossible: stabbing the goose repeatedly won't make the golden eggs come out faster. These photos are what's left of our passion for our craft.

Here are some photos (provided by the CWA) from the 'Save Our Devs' rallies that took place yesterday at Microsoft studios across the United States and Canada in protest of the mass layoffs at Xbox. I'm sure you'll notice some very choice words on the placards carried by those in attendance.

No, there isn't any extra space in the UI, I'm telling you. It won't fit. No, this is where the buffs go. That would overlap with level up. Yes but in German it's panzerhandschuhe. On a button press? They're all used! Yes, even stick press. It's photo mode. No we can't just add a button.

What’s a thing from your area of expertise (or special interest) that you think it would behoove everyone else to know?

A good read about Snowden and Thomas Piketty both describing facets of the same ending world. The fall of the current aristocracy is inevitable. I'm curious what comes after. A world in which every single interaction and all meaning isn't reduced to money will be... a welcome kind of different.

In the summer of 2013, two esoteric, technical, incredibly important texts were published within weeks of one another: the first is the Snowden leaks, which revealed a system of global, pervasive digital surveillance. 1/

"Eugène Delacroix's painting 'La Liberté guidant le peuple' ('Liberty Leading the People'), depicting the French revolution as a ragtag group of peasants led by a flag-waving, bare-breasted incarnation of 'Liberty.' The painting has been altered: the scene is now being observed with a giant, smoke-shrouded CCTV dome, and the distant building have been replaced with a mainframe computer.

Elizabeth's team won awards for making our games more broadly accessible. Their reward: the entire team was laid off. This isn't saving anyone any money: narrowing the appeal of our games is a costly choice in the long term. And yet it is the choice being made.

User researchers like Elisabeth Whyte made sure players' voices were heard in your favorite Xbox games. On July 6th, Elisabeth and her entire team at Zenimax were laid off. Now, make your voice heard and #SaveGameWorkers by telling Microsoft to end their cycles of layoffs: shorturl.at/5ruBE

Our criteria for success are disastrously skewed. In my view, a successful person is one who does more good than harm, on any scale. On this measure, most billionaires are massive failures, while humble folk in my neighbourhood who look after other people are highly successful.

POLITICIANS: We can no longer ignore the harm from addictively-designed outrage-promoting social-media controlled by psychopathic billionaires. We have decided to attack the social part. We will not be addressing the addictive design, outrage promotion, or the psychopathic billionaires.

France just became the first nation in Europe to ban teens from social media and, you guessed it, they’re forcing everyone to upload their ID’s for social media access in order to enforce it. www.bbc.com/news/article...
