Taide on silkka ylellisyystavara - näin on lausuttu suomalaisessa kulttuuridebatissa ainakin vuodesta 1872 alkaen.

I looooove this painting by P.S. Krøyer of his wife, Marie... he painted her quite often but this one is just so natural
Hello Saturday. 🖼️ The Flapper, F. X. Leyendecker, 1922.
2/2 Winners and losers in the card games of Lucas van Leyden, inventor of genre painting (and so much else!). His day is today.
Lucas van Leyden, died (alas!) OTD 1533. Painted the first real Dutch genre scenes! They are all about chance, knowledge, and prediction, as in this Game of Cards.

So much to love about the Swedish History Museum today. Perhaps my favourite was the Buddha figure found in a Viking settlement near Stockholm after being made in the 6th century in what’s now Pakistan. I’d read about it but still striking to see. Now I want to build an enquiry around it for KS3!

Exceptionally low water levels on the Danube have exposed parts of the foundations of the ancient Constantine Bridge, giving archaeologists a rare opportunity to document what they describe as one of the Roman Empire's most impressive engineering achievements. www.reuters.com/business/env...

Look up in Parma's cathedral and glimpse a drama: Mary, borne aloft by a host of angels, while her son drops down from empyrean to meet her. Amazing illusion by Antonio da Correggio, whose day is today.
The late Roman 'Lycurgus Cup' (dated 4th-century CE). Made of dichroic glass. The glass appears green when lit from the front and red when lit from the back. The glass depicts scenes from the death of Lycurgus (as described in Book VI of Homer's Iliad). British Museum (1958,1202.1) 📷 me.

Carnations in a glass, by my colleague Jacob van Hulsdonck. Today has been his day.
Exactly, totally relatable, this along with the infinite numbers
One of my most vivid nightmares was the vastness of the universe. What is it expanding into? What existed before the big bang? And i didn't even know how to explain it to my parents. Luckily my adult brain has learned to not think about those things
Still highly relatable, even though I can adult on such a level that the thought does not cause tantrums anymore
My 4-year/old just learned about the concept of infinity and is now throwing a tantrum over it. “It’s weird! I don’t like it. I just want numbers to stop!”
