🧪🧬👩🔬 Please read the article. We have more work to do as scientists and as members of a democratic society.
To stop the Project 2025 takeover of science, public comments are half a plan. But they won't get us all the way there. Here's the second half of the plan - and what you can do: samwang.substack.com/p/building-h...
Every time universal school vouchers have been on the ballot, voters have rejected them. Yet across the country, privatizer-backed politicians continue to force them through anyway. 🗳️ This November, AZ voters have a chance to bring accountability to the most expansive voucher program in the nation.
A $3 @mta.info subway fare and some good Q train timing can buy you one hell of a view of the July 4th fireworks and the Brooklyn Bridge light show! Huge shoutout to the train operator for slow rolling over the Manhattan Bridge and the conductor for announcing it.
This is absolutely true. I think scientific societies are moving in the right direction (i.e. automatic delays in ESI status for having a child) but we can do more. Including standard paternity leave!
Female academics have kids later (male academics, not so much), and if they have kids earlier, they face career penalties.

🧵 Public science in the US has taken some heavy hits over the last year, but the White House OMB is proposing a series of changes that will result in a TKO for science as we know it unless we fight back. Here's what's happening, and why it matters. 1/n

The GOP led Arizona legislature has refused to add any kind of accountability or transparency to the ESA voucher program so Arizona parents & educators have taken it into their own hands. Help put ESA voucher reform on the November 2026 ballot — find more information at ProtectEdAZ.com

This year, Arizona’s ESA voucher program is on track to spend more than 1 billion in your taxpayer dollars — with no accountability or transparency. We can protect students and stop fraud by passing t...

Just a reminder that we can fund science, and save the earth, and feed everyone, and have health care and housing too. All those things are within our reach, together.
Let me post a spicy take here: most people don't read or cite other model organisms' work. Because of this, they keep rediscovering things and, most importantly, re-writing the timeline in favor of fewer and fewer models. That, plus an artificial limit of citations per paper equals this 🧪
An analysis of published papers on eight widely studied “model” organisms suggests work on them is fading, but not everyone is worried. https://scim.ag/3PaOvIs
Thank you Kris Mayes. “On the day we file this lawsuit, much of Arizona is under an extreme heat warning…The science behind the 2009 Endangerment Finding is real and grounded in rigorous research. It is abundantly clear that greenhouse gas pollution has fueled climate change in our state.” 🧪👩🔬☁️

Looks at sky high gas prices and ponders what could have been if we had only invested in safe bike infrastructure, public transit, and massive rebates for e-bikes
Watch the movie Idiocracy, it will show you a society where people get dumber and dumber until no one can do anything except stare at screens all day. Let’s not get there.
The creator of the AI agent “Einstein” wants to free humans from the burden of academic labor. Critics say that misses the point of education entirely.
One of the things that personally drives me crazy in the U.S. is how youth sports/athletic activities went from a part of the public good (municipal leagues and fields! rec centers! public parks!) to a privatized, expensive, highly competitive, highly structured pursuit for wealthy kids’ résumés
NBC ran a piece where Mary Carrillo went to Norway to find out why they're so good at the Winter Olympics and i was yelling BECAUSE IT'S COLD THERE then she went to a little tiny ski jump for kids and was like "it's free, equipment is provided, & they don't emphasize results" and i was like. oh!

Action you can do today: call members of US house leadership and insist that they seat our elected, certified Tucson House rep Adelita Grijalva. Say you are calling for your friends in Tucson who do not currently have representation (me). Steve Scalise (house maj leader) Tom Emmer (house whip).

This is a VERY well crafted lawsuit. 1) Plaintiff is natural born. 2) He was detained 2X in a fast-growing part of Alabama, not in a city that Brett Kavanaugh could be easily duped into believing was all migrants. 3) Unwarranted detentions were on private property. 4) He showed Real ID both times.
