god, i was born in the wrong era. imagine being around in the Cambrian period. you could just evolve something simple like shell or legs that nobody had thought of before and coast on that your whole life

This article is so frustrating to read. First, this is not just “google’s brain” - there has been so much effort made by scientists around the world to get these connectomes to where they are today, and none of that is recognized here, instead it’s all turned into “big tech company 👍🏻”. And second -

OK, people who follow tech & AI hype more closely than I do: my 20-y.o. daughter, a creative soul who hates AI & never uses it, has become convinced by recent cycles of tech-bro bullshit that humanity is doomed. I need articles/podcasts to show her that resistance works & is happening right now.

Not liking either the Leiden Declaration (weak), nor the high nobility statement (extremely weak for so-called “leaders” as well as hypocritical, Tao having been a strong and naive proponent of AI til 10 minutes ago), I suggest ahmath.org, which actually includes the crazy option of not using AI.

We live in capitalism. Its power seems inescapable. So did the divine right of kings. Any human power can be resisted and changed by human beings. Resistance and change often begin in art, and very often in our art, the art of words.

Side note: I remain convinced that you could actually get those high levels of resistance at least twice as fast with a more carefully designed plate. The one in the video was actually too big for optimal evolution, the bacteria spent most of their time moving and not under selection

A short thread on "Rogue AI." About 5 yrs ago, just before "gen AI" hit the public didcourse, i wrote "I’m Not Afraid of AI Overlords— I’m Afraid of Whoever’s Training Them To Think That Way." It's mostly about how corporations seek to offload culpability for the harms of systemic prejudicial bias…
