25 years ago today, US Strategic Command was—by sheer coincidence—one week into its annual Global Guardian nuclear command and control exercise. Strategic bombers had been armed with some 36 nuclear weapons, ICBMs and several SSBNs were on alert, and three E-4B airborne command posts were aloft.

On 9/11, StratCom leaders were practicing for a fictional threat when real, unprecedented catastrophe struck

Nothing had prepared them to respond to multiple commercial airliners inside the United States that had suddenly been transformed into guided missiles, filled with human beings.

HMS Explosion had nearly foundered two years earlier in a storm in the Channel. Most of her crew had lost heart and got drunk, but a woman called Peggy saved the sloop by working the pump for 14 hours in freezing conditions. The Admiralty awarded Peggy a medal, and a pension for life. [2/3]

While looking for something else in the Imperial War Museum's online collections I found this 1943 painting by (Lt-Cdr) James Yunge-Bateman: 'The Outside Viewing-tank : Directorate of Camouflage, Naval Section'. Somewhat off-topic for me, but too appealing not to post. IWM (Art.IWM ART LD 2759).

One interesting detail about this photo; you can see where the censor has scratched out a detail on the tank's fender. Fortunately an uncensored copy also exists, I presume the number is related to the loading of this tank on a landing craft. Image: IWM NA 6646 / www.iwm.org.uk/collections/...

And perhaps as much as anything, I'm struck by this glimpse of a part of London that no longer exists. The picture is dominated by the docks and warehouses that made the Port of London a vital economic centre into the 1960s, before containerisation and other changes brought a rapid decline.
