There's (also) nothing "decentralized" about a PDS. It's just (often someone else's) server. One box, one operator, one point of control(-ish). Just because I have the ability move a file from server A to B, doesn't make it "decentralized"? credible exit / portability: YES decentralized: nope

Said something interesting to a friend today when they asked about different open social web protocols. It might be a little bit controversial, but: I think that ActivityPub is decentralized in principle, whereas AT Protocol is decentralized in practice. 🧵

In the UK, you can do these things at 16, but the government wants to ban you from instagram between midnight and 6am. If you wanted to do something actually useful, you could ban addictive features for EVERYONE and, I don't know, investigate meta for encouraging harmful content.

atproto has one big idea: apps should be lenses rather than boxes this idea is still unknown to majority of internet users. even to the majority of web developers we’re still at a phase where, if you explain it to someone, you can literally see it clicking for them in real time

[UK politics, BBC sounds] My own petty reaction to this is irritation, because of how much I think Purnell's awful pet project the ”BBC Sounds” app has screwed up the online experience of BBC radio. But hopefully he'll be better at this job.
