mistral seems to move away more and more from general-purpose models, which makes sense considering how far behind they are on that front, but at least their specialised models seem very good

Bluesky oldheads will remember that brief period of time when the conservative trolls tried to storm the place and were flummoxed by the idea they would have to organically grow an audience and that someone who didn't want to talk to them could nuke every interaction they ever had from orbit

Australia’s eSafety commissioner buried a report (released Friday afternoon) that shows the under 16 social media ban didn’t tangibly reduce teen social media use, and also resulted in parents tuning out of kids usage. We traded our privacy for no reason. theconversation.com/more-than-80...

I've managed to leave the house twice this week, and that's like 2/3 of the number of times I left the house in June and July combined or something like that.

I would also count Signal and Meredith Whitaker! And Jay might not be CEO of Bluesky anymore but it takes extra gall to lie about it *on Bluesky* specifically, heh. And yep, I started in social in either 2001 or 2002 depending on how you count, and the term didn't popularize until ~2006

This. I don't think anyone is really anti-AI. They're anti-the-companies-pushing-AI. LLMs have some really incredible use cases. They can be assistive technologies, help with mental load, and allow you to focus more on the present than an endless stream of tasks or your phone.

Crappy morning. I find LLMs really beneficial in certain areas of my life, but a lot of people think AI use of any kind is the devil. While this is irritating, what frustrates me more is knowing the real problem is the companies trying to shove this crap up every orifice of our lives. I'm so tired.

On the plus side, the bartender was fantastic & really nice and we had an unexpected but good conversation — I'd really popped back in to have a quiet drink (apple softdrink) and decompress after a 3 hour meeting/conversation with someone.

So I was at a bar tonight, for the first time in a looong time (excluding the recent atproto/npmx beer garden) and there was a male customer who kept trying to offer me alcohol and would take a hint "no, I don't drink", "no, I'm allergic to alcohol", etc At which point he started calling me "lucky"
