Two things can be true: - Arday is a plagiarist, a fabulist and a fraud, who should obviously not have gotten one of the top academic jobs in the world. - *Some* of the people who exposed him were driven by racism, and would not have pursued the truth with the same energy had Arday been white.

This was the only sensible option. I hope Jason Arday gets the help he so obviously needs.

Jason Arday resigns. Regardless of everything, hard not to feel like he has been repeatedly failed by serial institutions, which failed to instruct him or guide him into reputable academic work, and traded off his story without checking it.

As a meta-point in the academia discourse of today, it's a strange time for professors to dismiss the value of entire disciplines. That plays perfectly for those who want to wreck higher education (and who happen to have a lot of governmental power right now).

It would be great if the person setting a legal precedent in the UK that anti-Zionist beliefs are protected were not someone whose anti-Zionism is ragingly antisemitic. But that’s not the timeline we’re living in. David Miller called Mamdani a “Zionist” for condemning a swastika on an NYC synagogue.

This. I believe colleagues, however well-intentioned, are making a disservice not just to academia but to Arday himself by denying, or otherwise minimise, the stuff that has and *still is* coming out. These are not a few, isolated, mistakes.

Glad you’ve apologised. But you (and Cambridge, Liverpool and the GLP) could easily have known that denying obvious and easily verifiable plagiarism makes the racists look reasonable, the scandal more long-lasting and prominent, and Arday therefore more of a target, whatever your intentions were.

Showed The Ghost and Mrs Muir to the kids tonight. As often with Mankiewicz, it's a bit long and wordy, and Rex Harrison was perhaps miscast—but I'm always weirdly moved by the ending of the movie. I don't know why. ....which led to: "Dad you're crying?? OMG gross"

I'm more and more convinced that the main political divide today isn't left v right, progressive v conservative, liberal v authoritarian—but people who think that bad shit happens and that's life versus people who think we should try to ensure that less bad shit happens.

This is actual antisemitism - not because it’s criticizing Israel, but because it attributes agency over all migration to Israel, with no evidence. This is just the Great Replacement conspiracy, and it is ultimately far-right. Such conspiracism is going to destroy the left, if it isn’t policed.

This is pretty bad. Prof. Arday has built a web of lies from which he is unable to extricate himself. I am not even sure he realizes it: it's quite possible he believes them. That makes his predicament even more tragic. Of course, he is fully responsible for his academic misconduct. 1/2
