Lots of good points in this piece. In addition, the scolds saying people shouldn't advocate against data centers are missing an important point -- there is widespread, bi-partisan anger about the way data center developers are doing these projects, and it makes organizing easy. 1/

This is a good reminder. A lot of people have been looking at the content and not as much at the big picture. @timnitgebru.blacksky.app reminds us that we need to beware the ethics washing and understand the histories and motivations of these organizations.

Well, with this official Vatican + Anthropic mandate, I guess it was only a matter of time when the religion of effective altruism, worshipping so-called artificial general intelligence, merged with entrenched religious institutions.

We need more conversations, not less. More public engagement, rather than hiding and hoping that the threat will dissipate. More frank discussions of the ongoing harm and the missed opportunities to transform our world for the better. And we cannot wait until 2029.

Incredible that the only way to get the machine to pronounce the name correctly relies on the solution we already have! We solved mispronunciation already, without needing this! Truly a perfect encapsulation of these AI applications: "fixing" an already solved issue with added dehumanization

AI nonsense aside, the Gowers post links to an article titled "Diversity, Equity and Inclusion for Problems in Additive Number Theory". I looked at it, curious what the author had to say about equity and inclusion in number theory, or in math more broadly. Spoiler: Nothing

So the author is at my institution. Our CTL collaborates with units, they add to expertise. We are lucky to have finally been able to get a CTL. The Chronicle article is not informed. It is a Philosophical hot take that disses CTLs and a field in order to remind depts to pedagically engage. 1/2

That Chronicle op-ed about teaching and learning centers is such bullshit, as in, authoritatively making shit up. I’ve worked significantly with three different CTLs (private research university, large state school, and SLAC) and NONE are remotely like the imagined CTL in the piece.
