I'd like to commission a matrix mantis for my profile picture so that I can criticize AI without the hypocrisy of doing so with an AI generated profile picture. Budget: $40 Is that the kind of think you can just go around and ask people to do? I don't know how art works but I want to support it.

There's a lot of artistry that can go into the clever application of mathematics and algorithms. And there's a lot of potential to use AI as a medium for artistic expression. Remix and cover as homage is respectable. And that's all totally different than just having the AI do the art for you.

i hate that AI companies have muddied the word "generative" Generative art: procedural art created using a *system of mathematical rules designed intentionally* by the artist. AI-generated: created by automated systems (LLMs) using opaque, extractive processes unknown to both the user and viewer.

I expect that these models will really take off once the training process stops happening predominantly in datacenters and instead is mostly bound by automated wetlab efficiency.

Imagine millions of petri dishes, and a robot on rails with a microscope, studying each one and generating training data that's not found elsewhere on the internet.

Someone at Meta's advertising department knew EXACTLY what they were doing when suggesting the song.

“You’re a schmuck for following the rules“ is how we badly damage society. “Rich and/or famous people can escape accountability forever” is how we destroy it for good.

It really does matter which rules. Given that the culprits now make the rules, we're going to have to break some to hold them accountable.

Astonishing. RFK Jr. adds 8 members to a 6 member FDA advisory panel. 6 of them were sellers of peptides, and the 7th a compounding pharmacist. In an 8-6 vote with all 8 votes coming from these new panel members, the panel approved 4 peptides against the objections of FDA scientists.

We gotta stop treating money like it's a workable proxy for consent.

Many of my coworkers aren't merely MAGA, if you follow the org chart upwards, you end up with people who are involved with the Trump administration. One thing I've noticed about the environment that selected those people as leaders:

Velveeta isn't cheese, which always makes finding it in a new grocery store a bit of an Orwellian exercise. Don't ask what it is, the answer would do you damage, but categorize it well enough to find it nonetheless. Its a very American experience.
