No apology that begins with "Other person X told me to apologise" will ever come across as heartfelt and genuine Similarly, don't ask if an apology is going to change some situation. Apologies only really work when they appear to come from you directly, unprompted and without ulterior motive

Really pleased with myself. Went for my annual cardiovascular today review and for the first time I've got my weight down to where they didn't pester me about it.
