Indigo Dropwing female (Trithemis festiva). She is taking up the 'obelisk' position to minimise the amount of direct overhead sun hitting her and thus prevent overheating. As for me, I just sat in the water to cool down!
Good afternoon from the Kaçkar Mountains in Türkiye. Two beauties on our butterfly tour - Bosnian Blue (Agriades dardanus / Plebejus dardanus) on the left & Loew's Blue (Plebejus loewii) on the right. @europebutterfly.bsky.social
'Puddle Party' Good morning from the glorious Kaçkar Mountains in Türkiye! @europebutterfly.bsky.social
@matthewberry.bsky.social Anatolian Zephyr Blue (Kretania modica / Plebejus modica). A fairly extreme aberrant individual photographed by tour leader Ben Greenaway. One of countless butterfly highlights on our summer tour of the wonderful Kaçkar Mountains in Türkiye. @europebutterfly.bsky.social
3 seen in a garden in Wetheringsett and 3 more in Kesgrave. Maybe not migrants as there have been several unofficial releases in East Suffolk in the last few years. In 1995-97 there were significant sightings on the coast with a suspected small breeding population at Minsmere.
STOP PRESS: Queen of Spain seen near Wareham www.dorsetbutterflies.com/2026/07/quee...

'Close and Closer' A male Indigo Dropwing (Trithemis festiva).

Most bees are solitary, a few famous ones (like honeybees and bumblebees) are eusocial, and others fall in between – this green sweat bee was one of a couple dozen that were hanging out together, coming and going from a low-growing plant. Basically, it was an airport lounge for bees. 🐙🌿🐝 #Bugsky
I challenge anyone to walk past a Violet Dropwing without stopping to go 'wow' and photograph it!
'Down to the River II' I met Thyene imperialis by the waters edge and said I'd show him to the world..
'Down to the River' Met this little jumper by the waters edge, say hi to Thyene imperialis.
Indigo Dropwing (Trithemis festiva). Close and closer views.
Violet Dropwing: a visually stunning dragonfly benefitting from millions of years of evolution to produce the perfect predator. An unrivalled flying & killing machine! Praying Mantis: hold my beer!
For #mothweek we're shining a light on our exclusive moth focused tours. The next one in Hungary is already sold out, but there are places available for our trip to Slovenia next October. greenwings.co/our-holidays... #teammoth #mothsmatter @europebutterfly.bsky.social
"Livin' on the edge" Red-veined Dropwing (Trithemis arteriosa). What you don't see in this photo is me standing in a 6 foot deep, slimy, muddy, concrete water storage chamber.
Not many dragonflies come more vibrant than the Violet Dropwing! Trithemis annulata (male).
A few picture postcards 'sent live from the slopes' of the Kaçkar Mountains in Turkey, by tour leader Ben Greenaway... They feature: Blue Argus, Aedon Blue, Purple-shot Copper, and one of several puddling parties seen, comprised of numerous species.
