Today in 1987, 18-year-old West German amateur pilot Mathias Rust flew a rented Cessna 172 almost 550 miles from Helsinki, Finland, through heavily-protected Soviet airspace, landing at about 6:43 P.M. on a bridge near Red Square in Moscow. Ironically, it was Border Guards Day in the Soviet Union.
