My dad was a construction worker. He also loved history & always had his nose in a book. I'm a history prof, but should I have started trade school when I was 9 instead? I am a medievalist. I teach Joan of Arc. In the Vikings we read about Loki and Thor cross-dressing and Loki becoming female (a horse) and even giving birth. John/Eleanor Rykener, the Abbot who fell asleep a man and woke up a woman, Sir Ulrich von Lichtenstein. And that's just western Europe!

But one point that I think has not been emphasized enough is: this is a film about living in LA, as Nolan, my erstwhile British compatriot and age mate, has done for years. I gather it’s a strange place.
