The goal of having so much AI content isn't necessarily to pass itself off as genuine, human work. It's to obfuscate and deflate the veracity of all writing, which benefits maxxers and supplants legitimate writers. Creating doubt and paranoia is also a goal, one verifiers greatly benefit from.

M/M fics would get purged from other sites with basically no warning, so AO3 was the safe place to post it. It therefore leans heavily m/m compared to other sites.

Yeah, like, it was seen as a bad thing if mlm ships “broke into” a space. Like, oh god, they’re here. We’re ultimately discussing small, personally moderated, self-policing social groups. In-groups and out-groups and enforced norms. A lot has been lost due to a mod team or admin saying, “Okay, fuck these guys, get em out of our spaces.”
Literally, archive of Our Own: m/m shippers and explicit/smut writers saying, ok fine we’ll make one where you can’t purge our shit. It’s why OTW takes themselves so seriously and AO3 hasn’t brought any social media elements into it over the years.

No, femslash was not usually targeted in the same way. But if m/m slashers pointed out the discrepancy in how femslash was treated, the usual result was femslash also getting purged, not m/m being reinstated.
You have to remember this was the era where “gay” was a common insult.

An addendum to “AO3 was created as a safe space for m/m slashers” that I realized I should include for completeness: back in the aughts if you wrote m/m AND f/f AND m/f...there was really no place you could put all of your fics. Many fandom-specific archives had a “gen” (aka het) archive and a “slash” archive that might allow f/f as well. And each of these had different criteria. I had a friend who wrote an epic 100K word fic and could not post it anywhere because it had both m/m (so the gen/het archive wouldn’t take it) and het (so the m/m fandom archive wouldn’t take it.) Or what if you’ve got a f/f/m threesome? Does it go in femslash or the het archive? And don’t even get me started on those of us in fandoms where “male” and “female” didn’t actually apply if you thought about it for too long. (Giant space robots, my beloved) A big push for maximum inclusiveness in what was allowed on AO3 was to give authors a place to house ALL their fics, no matter the shipping configuration therein.

AO3 grew out of a fandom world where M/M on ff.net got “warning: boys kissing!!!” plastered across it if two men held hands – AO3 is where people went if they wrote M/M that wasn’t welcome on other sites! Especially if they were writing taboo works.
astolat is one of the founders, and she still writes – you can scroll back and see that her first works on the site are Wincest lmao

It’s why I immediately disregard any stats that equate shipping on AO3 with fandom as a whole. It’s a very skewed sample--if you include Wattpad, FFN, other large pan-fandom archives Het is far and away the biggest piece of the shipping pie. But people never seem to get mad at M/F shippers hmmmmmmmm.
