Nietzsche once observed that "our emotional life is least clear to ourselves" (Safranski, on Nietzsche). It’s a profound thought, but you don’t need a 19th-century philosopher to tell you that measuring emotions is a complex challenge. Here is a breakdown on how to measure emotions in practice:

In #ESM / #EMA, how you ask β€œHow do you feel right now?” shapes your data. Sliders 🎚️, smileys πŸ™‚, drawing trajectories πŸ“ˆ, or emotion wheels 🎑: they all capture something different. We break down 5 approaches (and their trade-offs) in a new #m-path blog: m-path.io/blog/high-fi...

Response rates is something EMA all researchers worry about. Insightful blog about how to predict and improve your response rates!

Why do participants stop responding in #ESM / #EMA studies? πŸ“±πŸ”” Average compliance is about 7️⃣9️⃣%, but that hides massive variation. Our new m-Path blog reviews predictors of response compliance: study design, incentives, participant traits, and time effects. πŸ”— blog.m-path.io/blog/blog-1/...

Super easy way to personalize sliders with a tangible effect!

✍️ New m-Path blogpost! Should #ESM / #EMA researchers show participants' previous rating? 🎚️ We tested three response formats in a real-world EMA study. One clearly outperformed the others, with consequences for reliability and affect dynamics. πŸ‘‰ Read the blog: blog.m-path.io/blog/blog-1/... πŸ“±

How to make good quality EMA items? A small investment to read, a big return by higher quality data!

We’re launching a bi-weekly m-Path blog on #ESM / #EMA measurement, new papers & showcases. πŸ—“οΈ Every 2 weeks (Wed). First up: item quality. A paper by @gudruneisele.bsky.social introduces ESM-Q: a consensus checklist for good momentary items. πŸ‘‰ Read the blog: blog.m-path.io/blog/our-blo...

Very cool study by Laura Dewitte on how the #ESM / #EMA methodology can even be used in a population with dementia. Results: βœ… 0 dropouts βœ… 80% response rate βœ… low reported burden βœ… positive participation experiences βœ… substantial within- and between-person variability

πŸ€” Can people with dementia participate in intensive experience sampling studies via smartphone? 🧐Yes, they can! Even with high-frequency sampling schemes (8 times / day)! Work from @lauradewitte.bsky.social in npj Dementia: doi.org/10.1038/s444...

Triggering questionnaires at the right time will become increasingly important in research! I am looking forward to see what researchers will build with these features πŸ‘©β€πŸ”¬ πŸ§ͺ πŸ“‘ !

🚨 New m-Path feature alert! Trigger #ESM / #EMA prompts based on proximity to a Bluetooth beacon πŸ”΅πŸ“± Perfect for dyadic studies πŸ‘₯ β€” deliver mobile surveys or interventions real-time, when participants are near their partner, friend or family member. #passivesensing @saa2025leuven.bsky.social

Very happy with this new feature that automatically creates individualized invitation pages for all your participants! πŸ“«πŸ”₯πŸ”“

Using fixed (e.g. stress>70) thresholds when triggering interventions or questionnaires is not optimal. For example, some participants never reach a stress level of 70, some are always above 70. This pre-print shows that triggering with personalized thresholds, solving this problem, is possible!
