Today is the hottest day ever recorded in #Austria! The provisional high of 40.8 °C marks a new extreme. Another milestone in 2026: temperatures of 40 °C were recorded on a total of 5 days spread across all 3 summer months; prior to 2026, it had only happened once (!) since records began. #heatwave

Mitte an.

A strong indication that the #wildfires near #Bordeaux have indeed produced #PyroCb #fireclouds is the unusually high of the #smoke layers. The #smoke is in #Leipzig mostly at 3 and 7 km, but some also at ca. 11 km (@ 21 UTC) – a height that ‘normal’ #firesmoke from #Europe does not usually reach.
Using C3S' reanalysis data ERA5 and @ecmwf.int Medium-range Control Forecast data, the Reuters Climate Monitor shows how far current temperatures depart from the 1961–1990 average, putting everyday weather into a clear climate context. More: climate.copernicus.eu/reuters-laun...
Have you explored the 2025 European Air Quality Assessment from #CopernicusAtmosphere? As emissions fell, air quality trends improved, yet PM2.5 & ozone episodes persisted, linked to winter cold spells, summer heatwaves, Saharan dust & severe wildfires on the Iberian Peninsula. @ecmwf.int ⬇️
The precipitation anomaly chart is as brown as vast stretches of the landscape in Germany. The drought is clearly visible across wide areas and has long since become part of everyday life for many people.

Another El Niño Record! Watch as heat back ups at the end. The heat building below the surface, which fuels El Niño, is higher than ever measured. This shows the heat just below the Trop Pacific sfc, moving from the W.Pacific Warm Pool where it’s stored, to the E. Pacific Sfc where El Niño forms 1/

I'm not sure folks have realized just how crazy the second half of 2026 and 2027 will be for global temperatures – on the back of a record-smashing El Niño event. Here is my latest estimate of where both years will end up compared to global temperatures since 1850.

Jim Hansen and I have had a friendly debate about whether 2026 will be the warmest year on record or not. In a new piece, I explain how we both might end up being right: 2026 is increasingly likely to be the warmest in GISTEMP but second across all six records: www.theclimatebrink....

It's no longer just a passing #heatwave; it's a persistent state, made more than five times more likely by the impact of human-driven #climatechange. @climatecentral.org
A succession of heatwaves and very dry conditions - both driven by human-induced climate change, fueld the severe wildfires in Spain and France - new @wwattribution.bsky.social study www.worldweatherattribution.org/climate-chan...
Human-induced climate change made the extreme fire weather that fuelled the recent destructive wildfires at least twice as likely in France and at least 20 times more likely in Spain, according to our new study.
France and Spain are facing some of the worst wildfires in recent history. In Southwestern France, intense wildfires have generated 'fire clouds', also known as pyrocumulonimbus. Fire clouds are signs of extreme weather & heat, & can make already dangerous wildfires even harder to predict & contain.
Over 250,000 hectares of land has burnt across European Union, with 1254 fires detected since start of the year. As wildfires become more frequent, intense & complex, reliable monitoring, forecasting, cross-border data sharing & #EarlyWarnings are critical to protect lives, livelihoods & ecosystems.
NEW | California just reached a world-first solar milestone Over HALF (51%) of electricity generation across the whole month of May came from solar power. Battery storage is the big difference maker, enabling California to push the share of solar generation to this level.
