As for today's other thing, to be as clear as I can possibly be: The Needle are racist truscum poopsockers, and the hit piece on Erin Reed is actual edge of madness shit. Erin does strong work and obsessive weirdos should stop trying to clout up by taking the dumbest swings I've ever seen at her.

If the symbol of communism is supposed to be barren grocery shelves, surely the symbol of capitalism must be shelves full of food nobody can afford to eat
NEW: Food banks across America are being overwhelmed by surging demand. Scott MacFarlane went inside to see the crisis firsthand. Here’s what he found:
this is FAR more demotivating than some left wing shitposting or podcasting critic of the democratic party can ever be
I had not seen this clip where Tammy Duckworth advises Democrats to "not impeach anybody," "get back to work" and "allow" Donald Trump to "save face" and I would just like to remind the senator from IL that the federal government took 4,000 Chicagoans and murdered a 38-year-old father last fall.
I think sometimes about how if American copyright law never changed everything before 1998 would be public domain right now.

It’s pretty ironic how much overlap there is in the Dems who say “trans people are so mean to us online, that’s not going to win many people over” and the ones saying “enjoy the camps!”
Democrats will not get the voters they need to turn out by having anxious members of the Democratic rank and file harass anxious people to their left on Bluesky. It may feel good to argue with people online, lord knows I'm not above it, but there's no universe where it a actually matters.

NEW: ICE is arresting and detaining a record number of pregnant women and teens. At the same time, it has lost count of how many had miscarriages, according to a Guardian review of internal ICE documents. w/ @amyqin.bsky.social, @wcraft.bsky.social and Flávio Pessoa
Anyway, it is Day 7 of the Be Specific Challenge, where I beg any reporter talking to these tech CEOs about how, exactly, AI is going to make us extinct in a year. If they dreamscape 50 hypotheticals, ask them to be specific, because they are doing a creative writing exercise for money, not policy.
I read way more of this than I wanted to, though I admittedly skimmed through the incredibly imaginative alternative endings. To me, this fails to address so many questions, and leans heavily into all of the usual broad “threats”. Hacking! Bioweapons! Trickery! Runaway intelligence! China! 🧵
People assume that you have to be a genius who deeply understands all aspects of computing and AI to work at a place like Anthropic, and as someone who’s been in tech for a long time, no you definitely do not. Coxon is making the rounds on TV proving my point. He’s either ignorant or a liar
Anthropic's models run on terabytes of VRAM. It's not going to "just copy itself to other computers."
I’ve been trying to figure out how to say this for a while, but this thread nails it
It is obvious to me that AI has immense destructive power, but I don't really think the people dismissing these concerns as 'marketing' are doing so because they are uninformed or as 'cope.' I think the AI industry's historical capacity for puffery is informing these takes.
We are told to ignore the racism of Hegel, Kant, Locke etc because they were just "men of their time". So what do we do with the racism of current academics? Are they too just "men of their time"? What is this "time" that seems to make racists of men?
I have a dire update on this story. I have reason to believe my source, Aurora Rush, was taken by the federal government as a political prisoner. www.erininthemorning.com/p/trans-coup...
Trans Couple Brutalized At Louisiana Park Bathroom, Then Charged By Police
An angry mob allegedly beat them. The police charged them. The municipality voted for one of the most severe anti-trans bathroom ordinances in the country.

“Extermination camps are very environmentally friendly because the carbon emissions from running the furnaces are less than the lifetime emissions of the people exterminated. Checkmate, leftists!”
Private jets and mega yachts are very environmentally friendly, because if you redistributed Jeff Bezos’ money to middle class American, they would consume it in vastly more carbon intensive ways. $500mm of Priuses would emit 50,000 tons of CO2 per year, while $500mm of yacht emits a mere 7,000:
actually i kinda *do* think using genAI should be such a social faux pas that the user is marked as a pariah and no longer feels welcome in the community. "AI is bad" is no longer an abstract (it never was), my city has been under a boil water advisory for a week because of AI data centers

"History will not look kindly upon______" Damn history ... i don't look kindly upon it... we aint gotta wait
Abolish and prosecute ICE. They did a murder in broad daylight today. Imagine what they're doing in the closed facilities we're somehow not even allowed to see.
At some point, we’re going to need to come to the collective realization that we must organize against fascism across borders. The fascists sure are, and we will need to as well in order oppose them effectively
i might feel differently if the entire west (if not the entire world) weren't *also* in the throes of a pretty reactionary hard-right battle, but, well, here we are, all of us stuck with all of these shitty governments together.
Anyone else have any connections at NASA to speak about that library being disposed of and if the internet archive can help find a home?
I think a lot of trans people go way too easy on organisations that choose to be complicit in our oppression. I believe this is due to internalised transphobia. We often don't think we're important enough for other people to care about our safety, wellbeing, and equitable involvement in society.
Hey, maybe we should start taxing the mega rich on unrealized capital gains
To put this in scale, Elon Musk's salary from Tesla alone could fund the SNAP program for the entire country into 2034.
I’ve been turning this over in my head since I read the piece, and as I’ve read the discourse on here over the last couple of days. I’m not a professional take-haver, so I’m not terribly invested, but here are my thoughts🧵
If you want my real thoughts, I'm going to write this week's newsletter about the word transsexual and how I think about medical transition within the larger trans community. Haters, please feel free to pay $12 to see if I say something cancelable. ;) www.assignedmedia.org/newsletter
