We're already seeing concrete carbonation now being seen as a positive, in providing a carbon sink. It's nonsense, aimed at supporting business as usual.
Wow, the article starts off straight away by highlighting the already - crystal clear - dead end we find ourselves in. With energy efficiency measures and conventional materials alone, it blows the budget (with it, our climate). Note that in the SMART pathway, new con fades out & reno takes over.
🎉 New article @nature.com! Ever wondered how the European Union can effectively reduce and remove life cycle #emissions of building construction and operation and reach its #climate targets across Member States? Check this out! 👇 Available #OpenAccess - Free download via: doi.org/10.1038/s414...

I am a straw builder because it's fun and 1000% worth the effort. The future is right here and it's comfy and regenerative. I will share my knowledge about building passive house modules and retrofit #strawhouse panels on the 1. December. It's free. You can do this. docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F...
Maybe it's just me, but I'm not hearing anything from politicians about the need to retrofit our buildings and change the way we heat them. Is this intentional, because dissatisfied people in precarious circumstances tend to vote for right-wing parties? Why are the 'social' parties complicit here?
We can calculate our limits pretty well though 😊 It seems to be difficult for people at the top to accept that there are practical constraints, even if they have been Machiavellians for half their lives. www.researchgate.net/publication/...
I was just thinking that still I have to talk to academics about 🐁 when we could already be building 12-story straw houses and retrofit half our housing stock for climate mitigation, adaptation vs heat and cold, for health and affordability.
I’ve just switched on the air conditioning at 22 degrees Celsius – I usually only use it for heating. The house, which I’ve insulated myself with straw bales, maintains a temperature of 20–23 degrees throughout the summer without aircon and AI. It’s running to dehumidify the air for comfort.

Parents are bracing for 40C // 104F temperatures in Slovakia 🥵 What can they do? In the short term, adapt (insulation, external shading, active cooling) In the long term, we need to stop burning fossil fuels 🔥 It's that simple.
By the way, even the #strawbale panels that we build with newbies like YOU in workshops all the time are already a #passivehouse component. This means that they make better walls than 99% of what is out there. database.passivehouse.com/de/component...
Of course, it’s insane to burn oil/gas in engines – that’s what most of the oil is extracted for. But think of all the petro plastic that ends up being incinerated to produce building materials, (which is a blatant lie to call this recycling) ...that could actually be replaced by renewable materials

And, as is the case every year, my 'minority view' is confirmed: we have an incredible amount of straw. So much, in fact, that we could insulate the whole of Europe against heat + cold in a climate-neutral way without having to grow anything extra, without competing for land, food, fossil nonsense.

Quality over quantity. Meaning over noise. Life over capital. Just keep making the turns, little and big, day in and day out, that's how we rejoin a life-sustaining trajectory.
We live in capitalism. Its power seems inescapable. So did the divine right of kings. Any human power can be resisted and changed by human beings. Resistance and change often begin in art, and very often in our art, the art of words.

A friend dropped this box off in my garden, it has the logo of the "Polarstern" (awi.de) climate research ship. I'm not sure if I have a new couch table now.

Any experience with rye glue / Roggenleim? 🌾 It's a very old glue used for shoes etc and nowadays; at least in concious circles, to provide #airtightness together with clay and a jute / hemp fabric / fleece. Please tell me that there is research about this #plasticfree alternative...

Far-right-wingers aren't banned from Bluesky, obviously. It's just that the main thing they want to do here is be unpleasant to the rest of us, and we've proactively made sure they can't. That's not a bubble; that's civilisation ostracising deliberate assholes. That's NORMAL.
My favorite product at the moment. An agricultural by-product is transformed in Europe into a high-performance insulation material using a simple mattress sewing machine from China. Fossil, linear economy hates this trick.
