Credited with inventing the "intimate documentary" style of photography, Joanne Leonard was one of the first to pivot away from street style photography adopt a more personal approach, focusing on her close relationships and immediate surroundings.

Coinciding with her first UK solo exhibition at Hackelbury Fine Art of vintage photographs and early collages, I spoke with Joanne Leonard - feminist artist, academic, single mother, and identical twin, known for her "intimate documentary" approach to photography.

What does it take to build and sustain Switzerland’s first & only international art fair dedicated to photography? I spoke with Sven Eisenhut-Hug (co-founder & director of Photo Basel) and Elwira Spychalska (art historian & artistic director of Photo Basel) to mark the Photo Basel 10th anniversary.

"An extraordinary dumbing down of culture has occurred, smuggled in via the promise of inclusivity and anti-elitism. The now-commonplace association between intellectualism, seriousness and snobbishness effectively places preconceived limitations on what people are capable of understanding,"

"record numbers of works selling for under $600 is not the kind of growth that the senior management of auction houses like Sotheby's and Christie’s, or indeed of mega-dealerships like Gagosian or Hauser & Wirth, is looking for." @theartnewspaper.bsky.social www.theartnewspaper.com/2025/04/15/a...

Is the art market coming to the end of the age of eternal growth?

Further weak auction results, plus economic turmoil, raise fears the trade may have passed its peak

Armstrong's point about the right-wing politics of collectors of canonized AbEx like Joan Mitchell reminded me of Felix Gonzalez-Torres calling out "the most successful of those political artists, Helen Frankenthaler...Because they don’t look political!" in 1995

OK, I think I'm done with this. "Armstrong makes an incredibly important point about red chip art and problematic politics when she said there are MAGAs who collect Joan Mitchell, too. And there absolutely are, but the problem [sic] isn't Beeple vs Mitchell; it's spending $60 million on one artwork"
