How has the rise of Asian popular culture in the twenty-first century expanded our understanding of global Asias? In what ways might media representations empower or disempower Asian and Asian American and Pacific Islander individuals, as well as those belonging to other diasporic communities?

Popular Culture Across Global Asias: Identity, Diaspora, and Representation In this panel, we explore the complexities of and intersections between popular culture, identity, and representation across “Global Asias,” broadly defined in terms of geographical regions and discourses as well as larger transnational relations and imaginations. How has the rise of Asian popular culture in the twenty-first century expanded our understanding of global Asias? In what ways might media representations empower or disempower Asian and Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) individuals, as well as those belonging to other diasporic communities? Since the second half of the twentieth century, increased and easier exchange of popular culture and media have helped Asian diasporic communities maintain closer ties with communities in their homelands. The emergence of global Asian studies further provided conceptual and methodological possibilities for bridging popular media across transnational Asias. This panel centers how media and popular cultures can enable solidarity, identity formation, and community building through such forms of representations, as well as how the fluidity of popular culture as a field of scholarship intersects with Asia-focused area studies. This discussion welcomes scholars, activists, and artists to share their latest work (whether in the beginning stages or near completion) that touch upon (multi)media representations of Asian, AAPI, and Asian diasporic bodies that challenge or reaffirm traditional frameworks of area studies. Possible topics for submission may include but are not limited to: Feminist embodiment and gendered bodies in media and popular cultures LGBTQ+ representation and social movements in media and popular cultures Race/ethnicity and representation in media and popular cultures Intersectional identities, intimacies, and communities in gaming, dating apps, and social media platforms
