I would have liked to see more goals from the Roses, but I'm happy they did not concede and stayed in the game until the end. Well done overall, and another clean sheet for Karpenko.

No one is pretending that FIFA was ever a bastion of justice and fairness. But the egregious maltreatment of some teams juxtaposed with clear preference of others, makes it too blatant to accept.

Long before Messi or Ronaldo reached six World Cup appearances, Formiga and Homare Sawa did it in 2015, then Marta and Christine Sinclair did it in 2023. Formiga is the only player (male or female) to have played in seven World Cup tournaments.

A reminder that Infantino said in 2017 that all qualified teams, their fans and officials, need to have access to a host country, otherwise it can't host. There are already numerous (predictable) US visa issues with the World Cup about to kick off and likely more to come.

Infantino was asked about the issue at the time and responded clearly, saying that if teams and supporters couldn’t access a country, there would be no World Cup there. “We are now in the process of defining the bid requirements,” Infantino said in 2017. “In the world, there are many countries that have bans, travel bans, visa requirements and so on and so forth. “It’s obvious when it comes to Fifa competitions, that any team — including the supporters and officials of that team — who qualify for a World Cup, need to have access to the country, otherwise there is no World Cup. “The requirements will be clear. And then each country can make up their decision, whether they want to bid or not, based on the requirements.”
