Hey team - it’s looking very likely that I’ll be hiring not one but two four year postdocs! We’re a fun lab with tons of theoretical and applied pop gen projects - broadly in polyploid, conservation, and human evo. Competitive salary, sunny San Diego! Do share with your about to defend grads!

I'm ordering a heatsink from Dell for my lab server and this "intended product use" caught my eye. Perhaps some of my students feel that bioinformatics has caused them mass destruction??

Bald eagles nested this spring at Oak Woods Cemetery on Chicago’s South Side. I visited several times starting May 17 and took these videos. Storms wrecked nearby trees, but the nest survived. On June 27 I saw a young eagle fly out of the nest.

My friend's NSF CAREER received the highest possible score (Excellent, Excellent, Excellent: High Priority) and it was rejected today. This would have been my friend's first extramural award, 5 years after starting their lab, exactly when grant $ is make or break for an Assistant Professor's career.

Been wondering why NSF isn't spending most of its FY26 appropriation? A $1.5B tech initiative may be the reason. And big cuts to hundreds of research programs could be just the beginning of the bad news. www.science.org/content/arti...

My student Josh Melnick did a great job presenting his masters research at #Evol2026 on comparative population genetics between Astragalus lentiginosus and rhizobia. This was his first conference talk. He is off to Florida State for a PhD this fall.

🎉 PUBLISHED!!!! Out now in @newphyt.bsky.social 🎉 We found positive selection on leaf shape plasticity in a Monkeyflower species. This experiment used two big field transplants, greenhouse, AND growth chamber work. It was hard, but awesome. With @ferrisifolius.bsky.social doi.org/10.1111/nph....

Phenotypic plasticity is broadly adaptive across an elevation gradient in the Cutleaf Monkeyflower

Leaf shape plasticity expression is variable in Mimulus laciniatus.

We moved 1200 Medicago plants out to the field today for our GWAS mapping microbiome variation. This is part of my NSF CAREER grant and we have a Chicago Public School teacher and a pre-service teacher on our team.
