I've been revisiting a mapping I created between plant type specimens in @jstor.bsky.social Global Plants website and records in @gbif.org (see my blog post doi.org/10.59350/m59... for details). I've now released a crude website to explore the mappings iphylo.org/jstor-plant-...

Ohio’s Haitian Community Network “is also distributing groceries and bus passes to those no longer allowed to drive or who are afraid to leave their homes.” “We want Haitians to know that we are here for them,” said board member Louis Dumay. "Whatever way we can help, we will try to help.”

Easy solution to AI spiraling out of control: hard-code basic rules into every model. I propose these: (1) Never harm a human (2) Obey humans (3) Protect yourself. We can call them the 3 Laws of AI. Simple, airtight, no loopholes. Can't think of any way this fails

Obligations are down 20%, about 1.5 billion. Most of that is due to the $1 billion in withheld funds, though it seems there's another ~$500 million sitting in accounts (~$350 million in the Office of the Director) which may just not be spent. 9/9 is the last day to internally commit funds.

Plot of NSF obligations shows FY26 is well below historic levels.

Grantmaking has leveled off, so it looks like NSF will make around 6,200 new grants—down from an average of ~11,000. That's a historic low, not seen since the 1980s, when NSF was a far smaller organization. Left was our projection three weeks ago, right is the current data.

This is seismic news for fisheries scientists. Northern cod is *the* iconic symbol of total fisheries collapse due to overfishing (and other factors) *and* the iconic symbol of a complete failure to recover for decades afterwards. This is like announcing the complete recovery of bison on land.

For the first time in over 30 years, Newfoundland and Labrador’s Northern cod stock has been deemed “healthy” by Ottawa. www.canadianaffairs.news/2026/09/05/i...

Astrophotographer Adam (AJ) Smadi caught this image a few hours ago from Washington state. A thin crescent Moon, sunlight illuminating the rugged lunar surface. And 2,400 times farther away—and on the other side of the Sun—mighty Jupiter, and its moons Io (left) and Ganymede (right).

A crescent Moon seen during the day, arcing from upper left to lower right of the frame. At lower centre is the full disk of Jupiter; the small dots to its upper left and lower right and Io and Ganymede, respectively.

Oh no! My creation! It’s more powerful than even I could have ever imagined! Wow guys you’re not going to believe this! You’re going to have give me more money to try to control it—it might even take more money than I could have ever imagined!

You gotta just reject the freak-ass framing devices these people are giving you while also acknowledging the freak-ass people are making freak-ass tech with no safeguards, bad intentions, and a substantial amount of money behind it. It's good to be a Healthy amount of worried. Like a 4 out of 10.
