Ahead of the first UN High Seas Treaty Conference in 2027, it remains unclear whether marine carbon dioxide removal is considered environmental protection or marine pollution. This ambiguity could shape future climate & ocean policy, writes @mirandaboe.bsky.social: www.swp-berlin.org/en/publicati...

Quite unfortunate that Katherina Reiche deliberately misunderstands the net-zero target. The flexibility she calls for is already built into EU mitigation targets: net-zero doesn’t mean ‘zero’ emissions in 2050. According to EU scenarios, we’ll still emit ~400Mt CO2 (=gross reduction of ~90%)

Some jaw-dropping remarks from Germany's Katherina Reiche, suggesting the EU relax its net-zero target: "There is a flexibility we have to get back... If you have strict and rigid goals, you bind yourself, it ends up that you lose industries that you need..." www.politico.eu/article/germ...

📢[We're hiring] CIRED is hiring a Chapter Scientist to support the author team of IPCC Working Group III – Chapter 3 for the AR7 cycle. This role contributes directly to the scientific assessment on projected futures in the context of sustainable development and climate change.

Following pushback & reactions on the stock market, Friedrich Merz specified his stance on the ETS. "I said that this event in Antwerp it is not the right instrument for generating revenue. Instead, it is the right instrument for enabling climate protection.. The ETS 1 .. has been very successful"

Felix Schenuit@felixschenuit.bsky.social · 7mo ago

New headwinds for the ETS from EU leaders. EUCO President Costa: “It is true that there are some leaders who don’t like ETS, but there several leaders who like ETS and took the floor to defend the system and that’s the reason we need to continue our discussion on this issue.”

Trump’s takes on windmills are of course lies. The last gasp of a backward-looking petro-state. “The more windmills a country has, the more money that country loses [..] I haven’t been able to find any wind farms in China [..] They sell them to stupid people but they don’t use them themselves”

Today, the European Parliament voted to put the Mercosur trade agreement to the European Court of Justice for review. It was a politically momentous decision, very tight and carried by an unusual majority, so it is worth looking a bit deeper into it.

HowTheyVote.eu@howtheyvote.eu · 8mo ago

This just in: The #EP requests judicial review by the ECJ on the Mercosur Trade Deal with an ultra-thin majority of 10 votes. More in-depth analysis will follow, but the majority was formed in probably the wildest way yet - relevant shares of votes from all groups. howtheyvote.eu/votes/183884

The new UNEP report is out with the latest estimates of 2100 warming outcomes under current policies, NDCs, and net-zero targets. Here is how it compares to both the IPCC scenarios and other estimates (CAT and IEA, who will release their own updates soon!).

The Climate Obstruction in the IPCC and UNFCCC working group has published a briefing which can be found on our website here: cssn.org/cssn-primer-.... The brief introduces a typology of 14 obstruction tactics which we will watch for as the negotiations proceed through COP30.

CSSN Primer: Climate Obstruction in the UNFCCC

Obstruction has become a defining feature of the UNFCCC process, shaping both the pace and substance of global climate agreements. It is often subtle and context-specific, making it difficult for […]

This is interesting. The EU’s #CBAM has become a key point of contention in #UNFCCC talks (see bsky.app/profile/mjfe...). Brazil is now essentially proposing a bad bank to offload this discussion, so that it won’t hamper #COP30. Novel use of ye olde yet-another-forum.

To be consistent w/ limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees, governments collectively need to produce less than half of the fossil fuels they are planning for 2030 (5 years from now) and then double down to halve production again by 2050, @unep.org, @sei.org, @climateanalytics.org & @iisd.org show 👇
