OSS burnout claims another project. On 2 Apr, an entitled user angrily asked the burned-out maintainer of nvim-treesitter to “go switch to something that doesn't require interacting with people”. The maintainer replied “OK” — and archived the repo, stopping development of nvim-treesitter.

Open source maintainers at profitable companies: stop asking permission to fix what your employer already depends on. No paperwork. No programme. No manager’s blessing. Just maintain it on the clock.

I don't think tech at large understands how hard it is to be an open source maintainer right now. So many great folks are on the brink of burnout. Funding is drying out. We live in a security minefield. Companies think humans are disposable. If you're a maintainer, we care. You deserve the world.

The NHS is turning back on its commitment to keep its code open. We're asking them to reconsider. Would you join us?

We need a UK Digital Sovereignty Strategy! Our over-reliance on foreign tech giants is a huge risk to our security and resilience when faced with Donald Trump’s ever increasing belligerence. Companies like Palantir have no place in our critical digital infrastructure.

Super interesting research on the effect of different approaches to AI use during learning: worse understanding when relying on Claude to tell us what to do than when making and solving our own mistakes.

Anthropic, makers of Claude, have published a report saying that “AI use impairs conceptual understanding, code reading, and debugging abilities, without delivering significant efficiency gains on average”; for Claude Code specifically, they expect even “more pronounced” impacts on learning

Can you help me make a list of people/orgs working on problems that cause burnout in OSS to share at FOSDEM? Looking for work on: OSS advocacy, OSS value metrics, payment and governance models, dependencies research, community events/spaces, mentor schemes, codes of conduct, AI attestation & more!

Stoked to learn as a bird fan and ideology researcher that female birdsong is widespread, this was overlooked for centuries as most research happened in the Northern hemisphere + work on female birdsong is more likely to be done by women! Researcher diversity -> richer, less biased bird knowledge! 🦜
