A hard situation deep into the Thai Jungle today after we got a tip off. Nobody lives here. Managed to get the first boy saved (more soon we hope) and medical care. I've never seen a dog go from scared to happy to be rescued so quick

This is a lovely, thoughtful piece about the experience of learning Ukrainian in wartime - full of insights into the process of learning a language and into how it opens new perspectives on the culture and lives of those who speak it. www.theguardian.com/news/ng-inte...
‘The war leaked into every lesson’: learning Ukrainian in a country under siege
The long read: Soon after my first visit to Ukraine four years ago, I began language lessons. It taught me more than I ever expected

(In honor of August, bringing this 🧵 over from twitter) August makes me think of the best summer restaurant I ever ate at. It didn’t have a name, just a tidy hand-painted sign: “Tomato Sandwiches—all you can eat.” #tomatosandwiches
Let’s be clear: what these bastards are doing to these books isn’t digitizing. Digitizing is about preservation and access to the original material. They’re gutting and destroying to make Soylent Green. Don’t let them get away with pretending to do this for humanitarian reasons.
@victorianlondon.bsky.social Any chance that you know which 1830s newspaper was nicknamed 'The Slop-Pail'?
I am sorry, British Newspaper Archive, but you are now completely unusable. Among much else now more hindrance than help, it is impossible to cut and then paste more than a single line of text. It was not broke, and you surely haven't fixed it. I pay, I believe, I would like a refund..

Like many people trying to follow the Russo-Ukraine War I spend a lot of time staring at maps of the front line.

Sometimes we forget that democracies have certain inbuilt advantages in war. They often screw up badly, start slowly, prepare inefficiently, etc, but democracies can also be better at adapting and channelling societal abilities and commitment. This week we saw the benefits of a democracy.

I did this interview for an internet publication, and they cut most of the literary references - quite understandably!

Latest post looks at why when war going better for Ukraine defence minister and commander-in-chief clashed, so that both replaced. I assess the potential impact of the changes, noting that rows are not unusual at the top when countries are at war. (£/free trial) samf.substack.com/p/turmoil-at...

This story is indeed insane. They literally *discounted his correct answers* (on questions about the Constitution) so that a Trump supporting girl who wants to go to Hillsdale College could win $25K and be televised meeting Trump. So. Gross.
This story is crazy. It would appear Trump admin officials rigged their nationally televised high school civics contest to keep a young man from a Sikh family out of the finalists. www.notus.org/national/ame...
PS amazon: if you will not allow me to read the book I purchased, then I trust you will be reimbursing me for a buy that was made under your obviously conscious false pretences. Is Mr Bezos so greedy?
It appears that kindle can no longer be upgraded with windows 10. So it's a backdoor con that forces one to install win 11. Which I. Do. Not. Want. Nor Need. But I have a pile of maybe 100 kindle books. What else would read them and bypass this techbro dictatorship?
