i know everyone has been dying for my take on emily wilson's review of nolan's odyssey and so here it is. it should be an embarrassment to whoever edited it. when a writer files copy like that, you should know how controversial it will be and go above and beyond to help them shore up their take.

Criticism usually is better if you prove that you understood what you were watching, however. Trying to claim that Zendaya’s Athena represented the “black best friend” archetype or that the film never showed the POV of its victims (despite the amazing Hades scene, Circe, the village)…

The oddest thing about the response to this essay is people who say it’s “personal”. You can disagree about some or all of it! I may well be wrong! But it’s not “personal” to analyze a film or other work of art, even negatively. Criticism is more than “Hurray!” or “Hiss!”

The grocery store near me in S Williamsburg shut down, and hearing about the commercial lease terms it’s unsurprising - percentage rent clauses (base rent plus a cut of revenue above a threshold) put them out of business. Perhaps a city-run store could apply pressure on those landlords?

Politics aside, do people believe city-run grocery stores with deeply discounted prices are a good POLICY idea? What are they intended to accomplish, in your view? What problem do they solve? Would you implement them if not running for election? I'm sincerely curious in people's answers here.

Adaptation and translation are different projects. Wilson's Odyssey captures in modern language the values and preoccupations of dark age Greece. Nolan is viewing the story through a modern lens and with a focus on what the story and how we read it says about us.

very funny that after all the “Emily Wilson is going to longhouse Western Civilization with her woke Odyssey”, Emily Wilson herself is like “yeah, a bit too much ‘healing trauma’ and not enough ‘relishing in the blood of your enemies’ in the new movie”

I’d never call myself an artist because of this, but there is a skill to AI generation that I’ve noticed with work. We have a company mascot and I’m apparently the best person at the company at knowing how to have our mascot appear in different situations but retain its key characteristics lol.

I’m a huge proponent of AI and I work at an AI-first startup, but the sheer number of businesses and events that have started using AI slop posters and promo images is just insane. I think it does expose the fact that a ton of people simply do not have taste or creative sensibilities.

Walking out in my neighborhood is making me sad because I’m not getting pulled around by an opinionated 12 pound poodle mix on a leash anymore

Can’t stop thinking about The Odyssey. I absolutely adored the nested storylines, where so often the story was being told by someone new. Such a fun way to nod to the tradition of the poem being spread orally and also do the Nolan thing of playing with the timeline.
