IMO the biggest pieces for the puzzle for AGI are: - Realtime arbitrary data input and ouput capabilities (Including input and generation of audio, video, text, and actions) - Context length - Continual learning - Post-autoregressive architecture

Tbh I don't think it's this particular subject but the zeitgeist is moving heavily towards pessimism against technology and discourage of exploration. I don't think it matters much if you believe in interstellar travel or not because it's too speculative...

there does seem to be some sort of group signaling or something where in order to be appropriately anti-car you have to vehemently deny that there's _any_ positive aspects like, obviously cars are great? it's a climate-controlled couch that takes you and all your stuff anywhere you want to go

I think the US' parking lots everywhere are awful and I think every car should be electric and self-driving but it's crazy to think that cars didn't enable all sorts of conveniences and improved people's lives.

It occurs to me that AI is better at writing code than coming up with any original ideas, so you get beautiful variations of the same code but human concepts are the bottleneck.

So what's the solution to the software stagnation paradox with regards to AI? Is a) AI is fake and not there yet, b) All progress is invisible, c) Most software is garbage, or d) The paradox is fake, software is accelerating, you're just not paying attention.
