The NHS should obviously not be obligated to provide white medical staff for racists either, but medicine is for everyone. Dialysis was invented by a Dutch Resistance member who hid Jews from the Nazis and the first person to receive dialysis was a Nazi activist. You just can't abandon people

I remember the first words my kickboxing instructor told us when I was 16. "This is all nice and good here but if somebody comes at you in the real world, run. If you can't run, kick them in the balls. That is more effective than anything we do here." Taught me that fighting arts are ARTS.

Something else to think about Jonah Hill saying he’ll annihilate whoever with his martial arts skills: If you watch the documentary Wick Is Pain, Keanu Reeves pretty consistently says he (Keanu) doesn’t think he’s any good at martial arts. Dude even thinks his choreographed movements are slow.

very senior black belt in our club in melbourne always got everyone with a trick question, around the time we would be grading to black belt he would sit us down and say now what is the first thing you must do if you get into a fight? eager students would say all sorts of stuff. the answer was run.

‘It has always been like this’ is one of the main pillars of this bullshit. They even use it in our ads for insurance companies - ‘when Australia happens’ or whatever. Because, they can’t really say ‘when climate change gets worse, we’ll be there’. Because, they’ve pretty much said they won’t.

The political right in Australia used the same talking points after the Black Summer Bushfires, with two additions: the fires were the work of arsonists and/or the Greens for curbing forestry activities, and "Australia is a land of extremes, it has always burned. What of it?"

Great example of this - Muhammad Ali. One of the truly great orators and fighters of western popular culture. A truly undeniable genius of shit talking. He said it himself - the more shit he talked, the more people came to see him lose, the more money he made. The talk wasn’t the fight.

One of the other random reasons why: Only idiots show their cards before they bet. Any engagement, be it a physical fight or a legal dispute or just a board game, you don’t tell people what you’re going to do first if you want to win. If someone is talking big, they’ve got a different agenda.

In my experience, no serious martial arts person will ever talk about their ability to beat you up. Lots and lots of good reasons why. But, one that few non-martial arts people know about or understand - a fight in uncontrolled circumstances is WILDLY different to regulated sports.

Knew guy who was a state youth champ in BJJ, brother to a state champ in BJJ. My friend grew up to train cage fighters. But, he told me he’d never even brawl outside of martial arts - because ‘it’s not the same, man; a drunk guy could kill me with a lucky swing, no skill at all ’. Worth remembering.

He will never understand that being "the fat guy from Superbad" is infinitely better than being "the martial arts chud nobody likes"

Jonah Hill says jiu jitsu has him ready to
"annihilate" anyone who still sees him as the fat guy from Superbad
"I love Brazilian jiu jitsu, except my body is begging me not to love it. My wife is often like,
'You're not going to become a professional fighter. You know that, right? You're a comedian"
"If we got into it, I would f*ck you up. I would f*ck all three of you up"
"My favorite thing is people are like, 'Oh, Jonah Hill, f*cking fat guy from Superbad.' And I'm like, 'I would f*cking annihilate you, dude. I'm not kidding you. Try it. If you see me, try it, dude. Bring it. Who's got it?'"

I think COVID lockdowns were bad policy only in that they did very little to ensure community connection alongside community enforcement. But, I think that was always going to happen in an era where governments/business presume community just happens and don’t fund or resource it in any major way.

Peter@notalawyer.bsky.social · 3d ago

it’s pretty obvious that a lot of people remember that COVID lockdowns were unpleasant and from there just extrapolate that they were therefore bad policy

Very few people seem to remember just *how* Glinner and Rowling crashed out, but, as someone who saw it in real time, they followed pretty much the same trajectory of ‘just a tiny taste of TERF’ and then from snowflake to snowball to avalanche to tsunami of insane screeching bellowing bullshit.

going TERF is like the fentanyl of prejudices. you can’t just dabble in it and return to normal life, you gotta double, triple, quadruple down until you’re trying to get a hit on a podcast with isabel brown
