It’s worth remembering that Vin Diesel is a colossal DnD nerd, so his version of the best Fast script ever could very easily include wizards and, if so, I am absolutely down with that. But, also, he’s been talking about the finale for years, it pretty much means nothing.

Something else to think about Jonah Hill saying he’ll annihilate whoever with his martial arts skills: If you watch the documentary Wick Is Pain, Keanu Reeves pretty consistently says he (Keanu) doesn’t think he’s any good at martial arts. Dude even thinks his choreographed movements are slow.

‘It has always been like this’ is one of the main pillars of this bullshit. They even use it in our ads for insurance companies - ‘when Australia happens’ or whatever. Because, they can’t really say ‘when climate change gets worse, we’ll be there’. Because, they’ve pretty much said they won’t.

What of it?"

Great example of this - Muhammad Ali. One of the truly great orators and fighters of western popular culture. A truly undeniable genius of shit talking. He said it himself - the more shit he talked, the more people came to see him lose, the more money he made. The talk wasn’t the fight.

Any engagement, be it a physical fight or a legal dispute or just a board game, you don’t tell people what you’re going to do first if you want to win. If someone is talking big, they’ve got a different agenda.

But, one that few non-martial arts people know about or understand - a fight in uncontrolled circumstances is WILDLY different to regulated sports.

Knew guy who was a state youth champ in BJJ, brother to a state champ in BJJ. My friend grew up to train cage fighters. But, he told me he’d never even brawl outside of martial arts - because ‘it’s not the same, man; a drunk guy could kill me with a lucky swing, no skill at all ’. Worth remembering.

Interesting insight into this: Incredibly successful tv host Graham Norton said, when he was a kid, he didn’t want to be an interviewer - he wanted to be the person interviewed. So, even a guy who seems kinda destined to be a tv host didn’t think he wanted that job.

I think COVID lockdowns were bad policy only in that they did very little to ensure community connection alongside community enforcement. But, I think that was always going to happen in an era where governments/business presume community just happens and don’t fund or resource it in any major way.

At the 1936 Olympics, it was suggested that both Stephens and Stanisława Walasiewicz were, in fact, male.[11] Stephens received scrutiny over her gender after her 100 m victory, with the Warsaw-based newspaper Kurier Poranny writing, "It is scandalous that the Americans entered a man in the women's competition."[12] Other newspapers soon also reported on Stephens alleged lack of femininity. Stephens later told her biographer that she told reporters who questioned her about her gender "to check the facts with the Olympic committee physician who sex-tested all athletes prior to competition."[13]
Newspapers soon reported that German officials had given Stephens a so-called sex test and let her compete only after they had confirmed she was a woman.[14] The Harrisburg Telegraph reported that International Olympic Committee performed a physical check on Stephens and concluded that she was a woman.[15] These reports were denied by IOC committee member Avery Brundage and no further evidence surfaced. Have you ever watched Taskmaster NZ and thought ‘man, I wish the assistant guy would make a 70s Bond flick except set at the New Zealand spy agency and with the most spectacularly dumb jokes ever’? Probably not, but you should have because the result is genuinely fucking awesome.
