I will say this again: Science isn’t just something that nerds do, it’s the foundation of the modern world. It’s why this app exists. It’s why child mortality rate isn’t 50% anymore. It’s how we’re able to launch people to the moon. It’s how we’re able to grow food that feeds half the world.

Massive budget cuts for US science proposed again by Trump administration

Budget proposal would also curb federal payments for scientific publishing.

#AcademicSky #PsychSciSky We all know: humans are very social animals But this study helps to quantify that premise. (even things we "know" to be true need to be shown to be empirically true) People prefer doing almost ALL activities with others (vs alone). journals.sagepub.com/doi/epub/10....

Has there ever existed a person who has a “to read” pile who has actually finished that pile before adding to it? Or is it the case that if you have such a pile, it is prohibited by some law of nature for it to ever go down to zero?

Well, it's official. We just received notice that all authors on the Sixth National Climate Assessment have just been released from their roles. The NCA is a vital, Congressionally mandated resource for our nation as we prepare for the impacts of climate change. This is a huge loss.

NCA6 Update
April 28, 2025
Dear NCA6 Participants,

Thank you for your participation in the 6th National Climate Assessment. At this time, the scope of the NCA6 is currently being reevaluated in accordance with the Global Change Research Act of 1990. We are now releasing all current assessment participants from their roles. As plans develop for the assessment, there may be future opportunities to contribute or engage.

Thank you for your service.

The NSF has stopped funding research into disinformation, a disinformation researcher highlighted why this is such a bad idea: “We know false information is out there, we know it spreads widely, and it’s important for people’s health and for democracy to understand what we can do about it.”

Government cancels disinformation grants in disinformation-filled statement

The National Science Foundation said the studies "could be used to infringe on" speech rights.

My PhD student's NSF grant was terminated today. Her dissertation investigates why air pollution monitoring, metrics, and regulations don't properly capture the harms experienced by marginalized communities--esp in the most polluted Detroit neighborhoods. She and I are happy to talk with press etc.

The U.S. has two tsunami warning centers, both operated by NOAA. Employees were terminated from these centers today. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center covers Hawaiʻi, and now it is less safe to be near the beach. www.tsunami.gov

Not a researcher who uses LLM currently, but this context is so helpful to consider for future collaborations and beyond!

Grateful for the chance to share my thoughts on responsible use of LLMs in psychology research @spspnews.bsky.social #spsp2025. Here's a summary of my presentation for those who missed it. Thanks to @ashwinia.bsky.social for organizing this panel! How should LLMs be used in psychology research? 🧵

Biggest take away: Will is awesome. Archeozoology is FANTASTIC. the use of genome studies & his work on horse bones show us how science should be done. Plus the gene culture coevolution leading to the adoption of horse use as opposed to other pack animals 🔥

Horses were one of our oldest preferred food sources, but they have since become central friends in many cultures and we build slightly murderous but beloved airport statues of them. How and when did this switch happen? (2/3) #SPSP2025 #EPatSPSP2025
