Rather than return to the present, Kitty attempts some reconnaissance and learns. . .Future Kitty is downright miserable. First of all, she’s engaged to Kosta, the most boring person in the solar system. Then, second but worse, she never studied astronomy and instead volunteers on the board consisting of society’s meanest girls at a failing modern art gallery. Her one positive is that the man she always wanted to marry, Alexei, is in a failing relationship. This is her second chance to win him back and secure a happy future. So Kitty ignores that her last memory before the meteorite encounter was Alexei abandoning her on the dance floor for Anna Karenina. Kitty decides on a fake dating scheme to make Alexei so jealous that he breaks up with Anna. For this to work, she’ll need the perfect man to fake date. While exploring her options, she crosses paths with Varenka, who knows her from a past she’s now never lived. When Varenka offers to help, Kitty finds herself wanting to spend more time with her rather than committing to the Get-Alexei-Vronsky-back Scheme. But it’s not like she can abandon her second chance for Varenka. Kitty’s seen how the universe has exiled Anna for putting her happiness first. If she focuses on securing a happy future with Alexei she can easily go back to the present where she can erase ever knowing Varenka or she can risk it all and stick around for this person who apparently knows her.
